Play Station 2 on the fritz! Halp!

I haven't touched my PS2 slimline in probably a year. I finally unwrapped Final Fantasy 12 and have about 10 hours into the game. So anyway... I had been playing for a few hours today and I went to open a menu and the game froze. I had to reboot it. Once I did that... it would just boot to the browser/config menu. I tried to swap games, still no dice. I know the game isn't scratched because i just opened it

You can kind of hear the game spinning. It almost sounds like it is hitting something. I just don't understand how it can go from running fine to... broken. I tried to wipe the lens with rubbing alcohol, that didn't solve the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Or something wrong with the motor (or whatever it is that spins the disc).

Unless you put one of those protective film thingies in it like the last time you had a problem like this

Also could be the "eye" not wanting to read the disc, I have an older ps2 for my kids, because of course kids are rough on games lol. Every now and then theirs does something like that and you just take it apart and clean the eye real good and tada it plays fine for another fdew months.
