Why are people leaving WoW?

Why are people leaving WoW?

Posted Jun 13th 2007 3:53PM by Amanda Rivera
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Virtual selves, Blizzard

When I read on Warcraftrealms that players have been steadily leaving WoW since the release of the expansion, I admit surprise. There is so much content in TBC I can't imagine anyone getting bored.

I can already hear the heckling from the back of the room as I say this, but think: the top raiding guild just downed Illidan. Exactly how long will it be until an average raiding guild, let alone a casual one, will be able to accomplish the same feat? Love it or hate it, the expansion increased not only the lands we were able to visit, but the quest lines we could follow, the races we could play, the factions we could prove ourselves to. I am overwhelmed by the amount of things I have the opportunity to do in the game now, to the point where I have trouble picking most times and end up bouncing between doing my daily quests on my mage and leveling my Draenei priest.

Why then are people leaving the game? Is it that they see it as something conquered once you reach 70? Is it that despite how much content Blizzard puts out it just never is enough? What do you think Blizzard can do to stem this downward spiral?

Damn, they are down from 9.5 mill to almost 8. Talk about a lemming rush :0). Any other game would KILL for their drop-of number.

For me, when a game gets bad I leave. It's pretty straight foward. You can come out with as much new stuff as you want but if it's just garbage well...I'm not going to play/pay for it.

Re: Why are people leaving WoW?

A long time ago, when I was a child, my mother bought season pass tickets to Six Flags (a theme park in Arlington, Texas) and we went there many, many times one summer. But eventually it got to the point where I no longer wanted to go. In fact, it came to the point where I hated going. Same old rides. Same old games. Go ahead, add all the zany roller coasters you want, it's still the same experience. I hate Six Flags.

And if/when WoW fails, that is the reason why.

Did anyone know that VanCleef is still terrorizing Stormwind, even though I've killed him 100s of times?

Still we loom in the mists as the ages roll away,
And we say of our folk, "they are here!"
That they built us and they died and you'll not be knowing why,
Save we stand on the bare plains of Wiltshire.

Re: Why are people leaving WoW?

a wild guess.. after a while people grow a bit elitists and when someone els beats them to it.. like a big raid and themself cant do it because of numbers or tactics or whatever..
they go frustrated and quit.

Seen it in DAoC alot. I was lucky being in a small but close guild - we found ways for everything - people got jealous at us since we also had a tight 8 man pvp group. Rarley let anyone els in... Seems kinda selfish maybe but looking at all others they did the same.. but we succeeded.
That bring frustration to others and they quit.

For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.

Re: Why are people leaving WoW?

I still dabble in WoW on Earthern Ring and believe me its a wasteland of emptiness other than in the major cities.

I am only level 42 or so and the new players coming through dried up about a month after the latest expansion.

Its a race to the endgame and when you get there? ...

I have no personal experience but heresay leads me to believe its dull as a dull thing in dull muddy water =/
