The [Page 2] values of the Knight’s Code are to be aspired to as it is accepted that no Knight can ever reach perfection unless touched by some divine power. The Code that will be [Page 3] explained in the following volumes is based on my knowledge of the Virtues and the basic principles of respect and honor. It takes from both these but I hope will seem clearer and more defined [Page 4] than the Virtues. Lord British first devised the Virtues some centuries ago now and long have they served as a set of guiding principle for the common man, [Page 5] Nobility, Monk and Paladin The reason the Virtues have been successful and are still widely followed to this day is their simplicity, but this can also be seen as a flaw. Due to their simplicity [Page 6] they can also be interpreted in different ways. The example I will give you is the Virtue of Compassion. To a Monk Compassion means the [Page 7] protection of all life, to not wish harm to any living creature and to aid all people in need. This is compassion in its strongest and purest form; however, to a knight, Compassion could [Page 8] mean to not wish a long and enduring death upon your foe and to ease his passing by slaying him quickly and painlessly. The greatest of the values in the Knights [Page 9] Code are the values Charisma and Conviction. These two values are derived from several lesser values, Compassion, Courage, Honour, Valour and Justice. A Knight should not be seen to be [Page 10] undecided on the issue of the law and should show strength of will and determination to enforce them and bring justice to those that try to defy the law. [Page 11] After all, a Knight serves the people under his jurisdiction, or the jurisdiction of his Order, and to be seen as indecisive and weak will make the common folk lose faith in the [Page 12] protection that is required by him or his Order. This could result in revolt or the people asking for you to step down as ruler and protector so that they might appoint their own [Page 13] leader, and rightly so if a knight should show such lack of conviction. Conviction is most closely associated values are Strength, Courage and Valour. A Knight should [Page 14] aspire to be skilled in the use of weaponry, show no fear in front of his men and fight only for the cause he believes in. The Virtue Valour is defined as a mighty deed performed in the name of [Page 15] his cause. Whether the Knight dies or not it is still a deed of Valour. A knight going to defend his home town from a dragon is a mighty deed of Valour, but a knight going out to seek a dragon in [Page 16] some far off land is stupidity as there is no goal other than to prove his skill at arms and thus no Conviction. Charisma is most closely related to the values of [Page 17] Honour, Compassion and even Humility. A Knight must show his people he has a strong character and is able to endure hardships and lead effectively in times of peace, as well as war. [Page 18] Honour is the Virtue where by you live with dignity and show integrity In a duel of Honour, you never disarm your opponent and whether you are victorious or defeated [Page 19] you show respect to you opponent. Compassion is the Virtue which protects its follower from sadism and evil. To show Compassion in war is to give your [Page 20] opponents a quick and painless death and allow them to die with some dignity, however malevolent their cause. A Knight must show confidence in his abilities [Page 21] and be loyal to whom ever he follows. If he leads he should respect the wisdom of those in his council and should never show himself to be more than his worth. [Page 22] The Knight's Oath I shall lead with Charisma and a strong will, I shall fight with strength and Conviction. [Page 23] I shall show no fear before my foe, I shall show compassion to those in need, I shall show confidence in my skill at arms, I shall be honest in my abilities. [Page 24] I shall live with Honour. The first two lines of the Oath are the core values of the Knight’s Code and relate to all aspects of the Code. The [Page 25] next four lines relate to some of the more important aspects of the Code that a Knight should aspire to follow most strongly. The last line reminds a Knight to live with honour above all [Page 26] else. Knights and Squires should aspire to learn an hone their skills so that they might one day follow this Code unwaveringly. However, it is never [Page 27] expected for any Knight to be considered of such strength or character that they might be considered a perfect Knight. |
