![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | [Arcane] Binding Spirits [Shard] - Sosaria [Type] - Arcane [Book] - Purple - 40 pages [Title] - Binding Spirits [Author] - Xorph [Page 1] The art of binding spirits is one of the fundamental disciplines in magery. As the mage is a medium between the spiritual magic forces of all dimensions and the [Page 2] target of his spell, binding spirits to material or living entities is the mean to create enchantments of all kind. - Uses - [Page 3] Ghostly, infernal, fairy spirits, as well as the very people's spirits, can be bound into magic runes, to create a magic item that will get its [Page 4] power from the soul of the spirit put into bondage. One can also bind a spirit to natural elements (creating elementals), or bind lost spirits into corpses, in the [Page 5] forbidden art of necromancy. But the bond may also be made between an item and the strong mind of the magician himself, which is called telekinesis, or [Page 6] between a weak mind and the mage, which is commonly known as mind control. A weaker bond lets the mage speak to spirits or interrogate them about future. [Page 7] As a matter of fact, the study of binding spirits has to deal with, both the different natures of spirits to manipulate, and the arcane procedures in order to [Page 8] submit them. - Spirits - Fairy spirits are independant spiritual beings usually already bound to nature. They [Page 9] are very common, and of unknown origin, probably the creation of the Sosaria, or before. Most fairy spirits, with time, bind themselves to their hosting element, [Page 10] which can be the wind, air, fire or earth (elementals) as well as a simple tree or flower. They do not seek anything but peace and eternity. They rarely enter in [Page 11] contact with humans unless requested to do so by a medium. However, they sometimes take part in heroic quests, probably more for fun than supporting [Page 12] virtues. Wisps are maybe a variety of fairy spirits that have taken a material shape. Fairy spirits, however, have very limited magic powers, usually [Page 13] consisting in one spell only. They have eternity for them and care very little for reality. Infernal spirits are more rare but quite [Page 14] much active. Those are the psychic remains of a dead person or even, very rarely, another spirit that has been magically slain. Infernal spirits, as a [Page 15] matter of fact, are not a complete mind, just the lost and angry wrecks of a soul. They have a sick psychotic behavior, usually seeking revenge upon [Page 16] one person or even whole humanity. As dying, they have unwillingly bound themselves to an ethereal dimension in which they are condemned to wander [Page 17] forever. They have totally random and disarticulated magic powers, and as they are unable to figure in their destroyed mind a coherent picture of reality, [Page 18] they spread only harm and poor evil, in pathetic terrorist attempts to be released from their chains. They can be very easily manipulated by the one who will [Page 19] convince them that their pain might take and end. Demonic spirits could be compared to negative fairy spirits who have granted [Page 20] themselves with powerful magic powers in order to complete their goals. As this is a too vast subject to be dealt with in this essay, please refer to specialized works. [Page 21] - Procedure - In general, the summoning is, more than magic, a psychologic struggle between the spirit and the summoner. Magic [Page 22] is, here, only a tool to create a communication gate between reality and the ethereal dimensions. Indeed, the mage does not warp the spirit into reality, but [Page 23] convinces it to interfere with it, the way the mage intends to. That is why knowing spirits is so important. There is real danger to lose the struggle and to get [Page 24] bound oneself by the spirit, especially demonic ones. Sorcerors deal with passive spirits rather than intelligent ones for this reason, with a benefit proportional [Page 25] to the spiritual power and, therefore, to the risked danger. There are different ways to trick or bribe a spirit depending of their nature. As [Page 26] explained above, infernal spirits should be offered peace and/or a possibility to accomplish their revenge, while demonic spirits, much smarter, should be offered help [Page 27] to perform actions they can't do, or even one's very soul to eat. Lesser fairy spirits as are easy to capture, for a mage, as insects. That is why they are commonly bound to [Page 28] magic artifacts or runes. As the spellbound will not last forever, that means not much for the spirit who doesn't really care anyways. [Page 29] Greater fairy spirits, however, are harder to deal with, but they have more magical powers. There is sometimes a price to pay for their service, like a negative bound [Page 30] effect, or death, etc. It only depends on the mood of the spirit which could, in theory, serve the mage without reward. - Conlusion - [Page 31] Only experience and knowledge will show your possibilities, and only a strong mind will let you deal with success with greater spirits. As you will [Page 32] bribe and trick spirits, beware ! They are eternal, and they will wait for you on the other side... |
