Why is the 2d client using 90% of my cpu?

I have a 512 ram and a Radeon 8500, which I would imagine is more than capable of running the 2d client, but when I play I'm noticing that the client is using 90% of my CPU! It's giving me terrible lag when I play. What is causing this to happen?

I've tried defragging, reinstalling, updating my drivers, and even reformatting my hard drive. None of these things have made a difference. Any suggestions?

What CPU are you running? 2D took about 50% of my CPU load on an AMD Athlon 64 3500+, back when I played 2D.

Re: Why is the 2d client using 90% of my cpu?

This is an issue that is old as the 2d client and is most readily visible at the log in screen, but can hold over well into the game screen.

I can remember reading something about certain things changing the number, but really; its not a big deal. UO is simply holding on to as many CPU cyles as are available incase it needs them. When UO came out, this was necessary for most CPUs on the market (P2 days, maybe?) whereas today, its just silly.

No worries tho, whenever anything else needs it, UO gladly gives away anything its not using. Go ahead and see for yourself by opening a browser window while at the log in screen.
