rare plant colors

Anyone know just how rare black and white seeds are? For instance, I've got about 100 cross-bred plants a-growing... how much chance do I have of a rare color?

Also, does a plant make just one black or white seed or 8? (Or do I have the whole process confused?)

Unsure about odds of getting one, but I seem to almost always get one when i plant 200 at a time. You'll get 8 white or black seeds from your rare plant if you nurture your plant to fruition.

Re: rare plant colors

The black and white plants are random. You will get 8 seeds though if it matures, but then they're sterile, meaning you cannot get any plants from those seeds or plants after you grow them.

Interesting. I never did/do gardening that far. I grow only orange poppies, because they give me orange petals, which I can ALWAYS use lol.

-A mutation (White or Black) accures only when X-pollinating for a new type/color... as I remenber, when the plant starts to produce seeds, you find out if it has mutated... I can't remember its been so long ago...

-Whites are much more common than Blacks... and the plant type is whatever type you were trying to X to begin with...

-the plant will yeild 8 seeds, and when you grow them, those plants do not produce any seeds...

In the 10 months it took me to grow all types, all colors, I only got 2 mutations (White)... Just like anything UO, when they say "small chance"... They realy mean SMALL... as like nearly never...

Re: rare plant colors

To clarify one item from UOGuy's post:

- Mutants occur only when cross-breeding, but you DO NOT need to cross-breed different plant types. I routinely cross-pollinate two identical plants when I'm growing petals or thorns. That allows me to get the chance of a mutant without wasting a growing cycle.

Re: rare plant colors

doesn't it also occur only in xpollinating bright plants, not dull/normal?

Re: rare plant colors

Well.... out of 97 cross-breeding attempts, I got one white. And it came from a bright orange plant, though I can't recall what I was cross-breeding FOR, so I don't know the answer to the question about breeding for bright colors. Yet. But I'll update this post as I have more successes.

Not too bad for my first attempt I suppose.

Exactly... I guess I should have said "type or color"... hehe... I was growing for all types, color was a secondary affect...

and what do you think you get when you x a Red Fern & a Red Fern?

You get a Bright Red Fern... and a chance at a mutation...

I'm going to take a wild guess and say the odds of a White mutation are better than for a Black... and if you x Bright Red to Red, you get Red... So, I think the odds for a Black are better than a White... but I didn't build the thing, so I wouldn't know... hehehe...
