The only penalty I've found in dying is that I lose fame. When you die, you need to find someone (player or wandering healer) to ressurrect you so you can get back to your body and claim your items. If you do not get back to your body in time (I think it's 3 or 5 minutes) you're body along with your items will decay and go away into eternity.

You also lose insurance money as well if you chose to insure your items which most people do. It cost so much per item but when you rez; your items will be in your pack and not on your corspe.
