Well met..

my name is Amber Raine and i have started on "Catskills".. i started today and from what my timer says i'm now 4 hours old

anyway i have figured many of the mechanics out, as this is not my first mmo it wasn't all to hard ((except its hard to get used to the mouse movement instead of arrows but that'll come i'm sure)) ANYWAY!!!... i see these quest giver people.. and npcs with blue, yellow...... names... some of these yellows are quest givers.. some are not.. is there a way to "instantly" detect which is a quest giver and which is not... other then of course going into the room and slowly hovering my mouse over every yellow?

please advise..

Well a questiong for yah, and if this comes out weird I'm a lil tipsy, what do you want from UO? Roleplaying, fighting monsters, or combat with other people, or perhaps a lil of all three? Once that's established I can help yah a bit more. I'm on the Catskills and will help yah out with anything you choose, so lemmie know.

I'm interested in RP.. liked the fact that ya'll had "elfs" that didn't look like big cartoon rabbits.. and i'm into hunting, crafting, and NO PVP.. there is just something about knowing that there is a "Real" person behind that other character... yea it doesn't really hurt them but i have NEVER been able to bring myself to kill another player no matter what the circumstances... i'll craft and create good things for the fighters to use to kill other players.. but i won't do it myself..

so guess i'm looking for comrades, hunting, dungeon crawling... crafting (did i mention i like crafting?) .. and just about anything it has to offer MINUS pvp

does that help any in the idea of how to tell which is a quest giver or not? i dunno but eh.. you asked.. i answered =D

Every role player should be able to role play a pvper.

To answer your question of "who's a quest giver and who's not" you can do 2 things.

1: Hold down CTRL+Shift and there will be "bubbles" with the NPC names shown above each NPC, double click those names or the NPC itself (make sure your in "Peace" mode and not in "War" mode) and you will either get a paperdoll or a quest.

2: Hold down CTRL+Shift and there will be "bubbles" with the NPC names shown above each NPC, single click those names or the NPC itself and you will get a menu giving you options, generally if "Talk" is an option they will offer you a quest.

Can i suggest finding a nice guild to join as they will tutor you and help you with all those little questions you need answering.

Cant help you on Catskills though as i am from Europa.

BTW, Welcome to the Forums!! UO does have a huge learning curve, so hang in there and make sure you come back and ask a lot of questions. Folks here will find the answers for you.

thank you all for the warm greetings and for answering my question.. apparently i was right in the assumption the only way to know is to hover or click on them.. there is no "Clear" indication like in some "other" worlds some may or may not have been to ;)

as for Maddux.. every RP'r should be able to.. sure.. i can play a pvp'r.. sure.. thats easy enough.. i just "refuse" to kill anyone.. so if the battle calls for me to just emote them to death eh.. i'm all for it.. but if it means taking my blade and butchering them.. nope..

As for good guilds .. i would be happy to find one.. so far on catskills i have talked to.. 3 people.. all NPCs.. yea.. kinda quiet.. maybe i'm not in the right place? and i appreciate your offers gang.. goodness knows i am going to have A LOT of questions

Keep'em coming, and I forgot, some (I believe the blue ones) NPC's will say something along the lines of "Hey, I have a question for you." or "Can you help me..."

Others will just tell you you have a stupid hat, those don't give quests.

Where are you?

If you are in Heartwood (Elf city) I think 90% of people are quest givers.

Most of the time, the blue names that give quests are "Escort Quests;" people that just want to be taken to another place. The yellow named quest givers will ask you to do something else; go kill things, fetch something, deliver a message to someone, etc.

I want to point out too that quests are a very small part of UO. they are a enat way to pass the time, and sometimes even ofer decent rewards, but you could play UO and never do a quest, if you so wished
