so i was playing fine this weekend back home(just re-subscribed to UO after about 3 years off), subscribed saturday and played all saturday and sunday at home on my personal network, get up to college and plug into the dorm net and all of a sudden the game will start, i can log in fine, it will show me the list of servers, get me packet loss and ping info, but wont connect to any of the servers, after a while it says:

"The client could not attach to the game server. It must have been taken down, please wait a few minutes and try again"...

its been doing that for 2 days now, am i most likely just screwed, and my dormnet has the required ports blocked or something? i have my windows firewall turned off.

I'm not puter savvy at all but hope that the many folks here that know about things like this can help you ...

Well if it worked fine at home and you didn't change anything with your computer, then it is most likely that your dorm network has a firewall up that is preventing you from connecting. This is a little odd, because from my college experience, most colleges don't block access, they just monitor what your ip is accessing instead. I would suggest finding out if the ports are blocked, and ask your local network tech support fella to unblock them for you. If you are paying for their service, and you aren't doing anything illegal, then they shouldn't really have a right to block your ports, unless you signed a document saying they were allowed to do this.

In any case, if you can login fine, and get to the server list, I would see what ports your specific server requires that you have open, and take it from there. Also, see if your IP is set in DMZ mode, cause I've had conflicts with UO specifically when my IP is put in DMZ mode. And one more thing, your network may have some kind of low latency, hence everytime you try to connect you time out. I dunno, back when I was a freshman, they had a upload/download limit per week, and if you crossed the limit, they would limit your access down to a 56k connection, which was more like a 1k connection... cause it took like 10 minutes to load up yahoo. That's all i can say for now without anymore information.


Oh, and don't turn off your windows firewall. It is 99% more likely that it is not your computer but your networks own firewall that is preventing you from accessing UO.

thanks for the welcome guys, and thanks a lot for the help merc...its very odd because i can play everquest just fine...its UO thats has issues...any ideas on where i can get the port #'s needed for baja shard?

"If you are running Ultima Online behind a firewall or using a proxy server, you will need these port numbers open for incoming and outgoing traffic.

TCP/IP ports:

5001-5010 Game
7775-7777 Login
8888 Patch
9999 Patch

You will not be able to play UO without access to these open ports. For information on opening these ports in your firewall or proxy server, please contact either the fire wall/proxy manufacturer or your system administrator.

If these ports can not be opened, you will need to find an alternate method of connecting to the internet where these ports can be opened."

so yah, they wont open 5001 or 8888 due to virus reasons, so im screwed lol...dropped 30$ on the game and 30$ on an advanced character just to help me get back into playing, and now its all wasted...isnt that just wonderful eh?

Apparently I have a "Personal Firewall" from Symantic. But I can't find the stupid thing in my computer. Any idea how to access it? I'm the computer's admin and I'm using a personal dialup connection.
