Advice from the 2-D client community please

Just wondering if there's any advice the folks out there that use the 2-D client could share with us 3-D client players for when we have to switch over on April 2nd?

I've never used the 2-D client and any helpful hints, tips, tricks, etc would be great.

Thanks!

[From uo.stratics.com]:

3D Client Update:
We have a specific date when the legacy 3D client will be going away (as always, all dates are subject to change.) The 3D client will no longer be usable on the live servers as of the client patch that is projected to go live on April 2nd. After that patch, the only clients that you will be able to log in with are the 2D client and, if you're a beta tester, the KR client on certain servers.

Guess you know that you have to get your macros all set in the 2d client. I don't know of any tricks that work in 2d that you didn't have in 3d. Hopefully KR will be available to all soon

Yeah i myself have ever only used the 2d client, i tried the 3d but it as way to slow for combat in the early days and the avatars looked awful.

I would say just go have a go in 2d whilst your 3d is still active. That way you will get used to it in time for the change.

Re: Advice from the 2-D client community please

Get organized! No more reziable containers. On the 3d options list youll see a check box under the Display tab for "Use Legacy Container GUMPs" or something to that effect. Turn them on and see just how unbelievably messy your world is.

The trick with staying organized in 2d is using containers withing containers. All my chars bank boxes have multiple "Small Crates" in them for sorthing through stuff. The only thin that is in my bank box taht isnt in a sub container is gold and a few items here and there.

Honestly, that was the only thing that I had to get used to when I startd playing 2d exclusively...

If Adam peeks in, perhaps he can enable or point you to the tech post I wrote about streamlining the clients. Not at home, but know its there.

Off the top of my head though,
What's been mentioned above. You can start organizing your containers. Not sure how the current 2d & 3d macro system's going to convert, but as it is now, they are two seperate files as seen inside your character folder.

After every patch, start up both clients 3D & 2D and give them permission to exit your firewall if you're running one.

Practice setting up your desktop now, to something you find usable and your happy with. Wouldn't do to wait till "dead line" and then trying to organize your playing view.

Good Luck,

Re: Advice from the 2-D client community please

One nice thing you'll enjoy with the 2d client is the status change gump, which allows you to see which spell effects and buffs you are under at any one time. To access the staus change gump, you open your status gump by clicking on your lifebar and clicking the small blue gem in the upper left corner. A small L-shaped doohickey will appear, which can be dragged by clicking and dragging by the arms (not the gem). Click the gem to rotate the status gump 45° per click.

Some macros work differently as well. The 3d client doesn't use the wait for target option all that much, it is very necessary when using the 2d client. For example, a spell macro in 3d might read cast spell/invisibility/target self, and the same macro in 2d would have to be set up as cast spell/invisibility/wait for target/target self.

Spell icons don't dock gracefully, you have to position them carefully if you want a neat appearance.

You'll hate how cartoonish some of the art is. The gorgeous, fire-wreathed Fire Steed becomes an ugly fat orange horse; dragons aren't sleek, but rather comical-looking; you won't be able to distinguish an Ogre from an Ogre Lord, because there is no art for the latter; some of the paperdoll art is better, some worse.

Re: Advice from the 2-D client community please

Great point about the Buff Bar Rhus. I couldnt believe it when I heard that they didnt put that in 3d. One of the coolest additoins since AoS, imho.

Another thought that I had was what is your Desktop default resolution? Sadly, the 2d play window can only go as big as 800x600. While it does leave plenty of room for icons, containers, paperdoll, etc. if you have a 17" LCD screen or biggger, you may find yourself leaning in to see little thing now and then.

At least KR is on the way at some point and Ill be able to sit back in my chair again...

Re: Advice from the 2-D client community please

Thanks for all the great info, everyone.

I logged in one of my chars in the 2D client and have a few thoughts and a question or two.

The client is pretty cool in most regards:

1) Weather! Very cool.
2) Seems like performance is better than under 3D. I noticed that I don't get stuck behind trees now...
3) Radar map show you as a blinking dot. Minor thing, but useful.
4) Targeting is great in 2D!
5) Buff/Debuff is great too.

The only thing I haven't got used to, and it was mentioned earlier, is the containers. Uggghh. I've got a lot of work to do in my house.

Question: What do you all do at night? Is it supposedto be practically pitch black in 2D? Luckily I was outside my house when it went dark and I managed to make my way in and grab a bracelet that had Night Sight. If I had been out in the forest I'm not sure what I would have done.

Anyway, thanks again for the advice!

It can get really dark in 2d. Be sure to carry night sight or that bracelet.

One more thing before I forget..dying in 2d if you have containers in your backpack with blessed items. When you autoloot all that ends up in the main pack
