Is the grass really greener?

Apologies if this is posted in the wrong thread, I'm kinda at my wits end and truly wish to reach a wider audience rather than spamming multiple different individual shard threads..

Is there a shard where people talk to each other, where the economy is.. well, not thriving, but at least not a stagnant cess-pool? Is there a shard out there where people hunt together and come across and actually interact with other human beings in this wonderful Massively Multi-Player Online Role-Playing Game we play?

My career in UO has been long and very varied. I started playing UO back in beta days, played for a few years, then left for *cringe* EQ.. came back for a few months, then left gaming altogether for about five years. I returned to UO about two and half years ago, made a few friends on my home shard (Baja), but could not find anyone from the "good ol' days". After a third hiatus, I've been playing again for the last couple of months.. and sadly, Baja's population is as dead as ever. In retrospect, I remember that each time I returned, the street traffic was less and less than it was before.. and now, this time, it's painfully low.

Bottom line: I'm lonely.

I remember happier days hunting harpies in Covetous, EVing dragons in Destard (yay purple llamas!), even getting married while fighting liches in Deceit in 1998 (eek, feeling old.. yes, I was a dread lady back then)! Years later, while hunting down Ophidians on my second return, I had a few people at my side, and if I didn't, I met some along the way. Today, there is no one to hunt with and no one to explore with.

I realize that UO has passed its heyday. I've been searching for another shard that has a higher population.. but my visits to Atlantic (the supposedly largest population shard) have only resulted in witnessing a packed Britain bank.. yes, packed.. packed with macroing spammers and no real live or responsive bodies. Visits to other shards have proved as equally fruitless.

What I want is this: Sell me your shard. I want a relatively active hunting community, guilded or not (I'm not opposed to joining a guild, but I would like the opportunity to enjoy the varied community experience of "old school" UO). Have you run into a random person on some of your recent hunting trips? I've been out hunting for hours (HOURS!) on Baja and have yet to run into a single live person. I'd like to experience cities with a bit more liveliness and random conversation. I am not opposed to role-playing (though I'm not very good at it). I am rusty as can be, given my intermittent playing over the years and am still trying to catch up with all the changes. What is not rusty, however, is my desire to play, have fun and meet new people--crazily enough, I like dying (as long as it means I've had fun along the way)!. I should also note that I generally play late nights on the Pacific coast in the US.

So am I beating a dead horse? Am I wasting my time? I'm not asking for perfection, nor am I asking for the game I played 10 years ago. I put in 1-6 hours a night playing and still haven't made any friends--or even acquaintances--in three months. I know there has to be something better out there.. and if there's not, maybe it is time to go back to WOW (say it ain't so!).

Re: Is the grass really greener?

Welcome to the forums trinx! I love Chessie shard. Now, if you go to Britian, it's very slow to see anyone. However, Haven (where you'll be when you start a new char) and Luna have people around. I belong to a guild, and guildmates along with alliance guild members go to Haven periodically just to help others and do Compassion virtue escorts. What do you consider late nights? I am on EST time zone. Lord Havok usually comes and plays later than I do. This is a good thing since he is human and of a more evil persuasion than I am. I do RP, but others do not.

So I'm going to ask you give Chessie a try for a week and see for yourself.

(BTW my account is inactive at the moment, but I'll be back in the fall.)

Re: Is the grass really greener?

Welcome trinx,

Well I will put forth my shard of Lake Superior, I know there are groups of players there that gather nearly everyday for group hunts and various other activatives. They gather at the skara brae conselor house/community center. Bad news is this group usually starts around 7:30 pm Central Time so I am not quite sure you can be on then. But I would stop by with a new character and check us out. Unfortuantely I have not be able myself to go to many gatherings, started a new job a few months back now and we are still working 70+ hours a week. So the best I can do is answer questions here a few times a week after work as I unwind myself from the long night.

I would love to put forward Europa but late nights Pacific means you'll be on when the shard is down

Fer me dis der game is da cat's meow.

Sure, lots of lonely times. But, I seem to do what it is I just wants to dooz. And dat der is what matters. If I was on another shard, I might get into some more action, but seeing I am on Legends, though there is plentys of elbow room, it is lacking in peoples to play with.

Evenso, fer nows, its just da games fer me.

When it goes, I will as well. Don't play anyting else. Don't tink I ever will. Only startin' out anyways as a bonding ting wit me offspring units dat played.

But come to Legends anyhow. You'll like it.

Re: Is the grass really greener?

I happen to like where I am on Catskills. There are always folks hanging around in Haven, most of whom are more than willing to go out hunting at the first whisper of "hey, do you want to......?" (fill in the blank).
As perhaps you might have read, we do have a rather booming alliance, but certainly membership in any guild is an option, not a requirement. RP is there if you wish. PVM is there, crafting, hunting, PVP, solitary exploration.....whatever you choose to do. No matter how you play your UO, there is usually someone else there playing the way you play about the same time you are. Many time zones play on Cats, but the shard itself is an Eastern time zone shard. I can say, though, many folks on the west coast are on and quite late. Make a test character if you wish, and come check us out. We'd be happy to show you who's around. And...we are friendly

Re: Is the grass really greener?

I also do not belong to a guild and, so far, enjoy soloing. I play on the Pacific Shard, which, while not being as uber-crowded as it was in the hey day, is far from alone. I generally play between 5 pm-12 am PST, and while around 5ish can be more slow, there have been times later at night when I go to Destard and then have to leave because there are enough pp to take care of all the dragons without me. I have also been known to frequent Shame, and about 50% of the time and by myself, but I do see a couple of the same names appearing there, too. I have seen no one when I fight ophidians, however. As for the Britain bank there are usually 1-3 people there, but, as been said before, if you go to New Haven or Luna there are quite a good amount there. So far, I have found Pacific to be friendly, with a good mix of number of people but not too many (so I have a chance with my fairly lame archer to take down some of the stuff in Destard)!

Re: Is the grass really greener?

I play on Pac too. Mainly with my guildmates, but there are enough people where I can run into others - like it or not lol. Our guild stuff usually is at 8pm Pac time, but runs later than that. Also, if someone is on, they are usually up for a hunt, training, whatever. In the guild we have assorted players, from all styles to vets who have been here since day one almost, to people who are barely a week old in the game. If you decide to visit Pac, you are welcome to come along on a guild hunt with us and have a look around for yourself. Just shoot me a PM and lemme know, and I'll be happy to come and get you so you can join in!

Re: Is the grass really greener?

I extend an invitation to come over to the bustling realm of Great Lakes. This is one of the few remaining shards that have a good number of people hanging around WBB just like the old days. Lots of random faces on this shard, many different people to interact with.

I too returned after a long break to find my home shard, Napa, deserted. So I started a new life on Great Lakes and am very glad I did. I met my best uo friend here doing lady mel. She was getting keys and I had a blessing. I asked her if she wanted to come along on my run and we have been great friends since.

I play a thief as well as my alts and was pleasantly surprised at the populace of the feluccia facet. Lots of random people to interact with all over the place.

I write comics about my interactions... uothief.com

edit: I also know a plot or two for max storage houses, let me know if you want one.
