Don't forget that in those days, gear didn't account for as much. A good set of GM-made armor and you were ready to adventure. UO's turning into an item-based game that requires "hard work" was the end of it's charm in my opinion. If I want to camp for artifacts, I'll play an EQ clone, thanks very much.
I don't, and never did, PvP very much. But UO was the only game that really ever achieved a virtual society... bright chapels and dark alleys alike. I miss the days were you didn't know what was around the corner. Sure, I got ganked more than a few times... but I was also able to run to the nearest gathering spot and get a group of friends together to go hunt down the !!!!!!! that murdered me in cold blood.
Watching him get hammered by 6 blues was infinitely entertaining and immensely satisfying.
