Hey everyone, new player here. Got a couple questions for you guys, but I'd first like to say that this community seems to be one of the tightest knit groups in the genre, and I love it! Grats on that, and I'm proud to now be part of it.

Okay, now to the questions. I haven't purchased the game yet, and am curious as to which version to get. I work at the local Gamestop, and we always have a few different versions of the game, including the 7th and 9th anniversary editions (I know there are many more, just can't think of em). I'm confused as to which version and expansions I need to get the full experience of the game. *shrug* I guess that's all for now, looking forward to your responses so I can start playing! Thanks

9th anniversary would be the latest copy and that'd give you a new player code to create an account
You might as well buy it then install from the dvd/cd that comes with it.

As he said, 9th anniversary is the latest, Kingdom reborn is available to download but is still pretty buggy, and i think youd still need 9th anniversary to have allt he features. Not positive tho.

P.S., you need a preeeetty good PC to play Kingdom Reborn

it will give you access to all current content. But it will only give you the 2D (original) client to use.

If you want the new Kingdom Reborn client it is a different download, it can not be bought anywhere. EAMythic is supposably working on a new disk, since the last few patches have been 800 MBs+ It uses a WoW type interface so you might be more familiar with that type of interface. But there are many problems with the KR client still.

If you can get past the outdated graphics UO is a deep game. I can make a new character and go to anywhere in the game world. I am not limited to the newbie zones. Yes I will die alot if I choose this but I still have the choice to do this if I want. You are also not forced to group to get good, you have alot of choice of how to build your characters. I find new people have the most trouble with building a new character. Because unlike newer games, UO will not tell how or what you need in your character.

So if you wanted to make a character that:
begged
herds animals
detects other hidden character
removes traps from treasure chests
learning camping to log out anywhere in game

you could, this character would suck at any type of combat (pvp or pvm) but you can still make this character if you wish.

Also you need to decide which server (called shards in UO) you going to play on.
You should play on a shard which you get the fastest ping to, and closest to you real life time zone. I mean lets say your in the US, if you pick a Japanese/Asian shard because of the time difference you not going to see as many people as if you played on a US shard. But again even this is up to you.

Ask as many questions as you need too. Most here do not mind answering questions. I know I do not mind. I remember how lost I was 10 years ago when I started playing.

Don't make the mistake I did in buying Mondains Legacy for $30 online only to find out I could have bought the 9th anniversary for $20 and had all the upgrades....

You can order KR here, although it is an early version of KR and will need a lot of patching. EAM is working on a new image of the KR client disk so it won't need as much patching.

If your PC is relatively current, 2D will run like a bat out of hell... it'll fly. With KR, you'll more horsepower in general... especially video. KR doesn't like integrated video or older video cards... and need a real video card (256m or better), and either a nVidia 7/8/9 series or Radeon 1k/2k/3k series or better (any vid cards older are hit & miss and will likely choke regardless of VRAM).

Thanks for all of your responses! Almost bought ML, but thanks to you guys I'm heading out to Gamestop right now to pick up 9th Edition. Glad I was patient, lol .

2D isn't a problem as long as the gameplay is there, and from what I've read, it's nothing short of fantastic. Thanks again guys!

correct KR is just the newest client but you can still play 2d without dl'ing KR. Try both of them out reviews are mixed some love it others hate it.
