![]() | Re: MoonGlow on the Horizon!!! From ultima v... " Originally Released in 1988 If you can put up with the primitive graphics, I recommend you play this game. It's one of my favourites. Ultima V has one of the best stories of any Ultima, and is a really atmospheric game. It's full of moments of genuine tension, fear, and sadness. There's lots of sneaking around, and hiding from guards in Ultima V, all great fun. It makes a real change to play as an outlaw. The combat system in Ultima V is very like the combat in Ultima IV, and works very well. For combat you go to a different screen, which varies depending on the terrain you are in when combat starts. Combat is turn based and though quite primitive is very playable. Ultima V proves that it's story and gameplay that makes a brilliant game, not graphics. Forget your 3D processor hungry games, try this instead. ULTIMA V THE STORY The avatar returns to Britannia to discover that Lord Blackthorn rules Britannia. Lord British had decided to lead an expedition to the previousely uncharted Underworld, and has not returned. Only one of the party of adventurers led by Lord British has returned to the surface, and he brought dire news. An evil monster had attacked them, and killed everyone, including Lord British. Without their sovereign the people begin to panic. To quell the panic Lord Blackthorn, a trusted friend of Lord British, installs himself as ruler of Britannia. Initially Lord Blackthorns intentions are good, but he is soon corrupted by the three Shadowlords. You arrive in Britannia to find that your friends, and companions from previous advntures have been declared outlaws. Lord Blackthorn has instigated a harsh system of new laws, based on the virtues, but removing peoples freedom of choice. Your quest is to discover the truth about the disappearance of Lord British, and to save Britannia from the threat of the Shadowlords, and the corrupt Blackthorn. BLACKTHORN'S VIRTUES Unlike Lord British, Lord Blackthorn believed that the virtues should be enforced by law. Thus Lord Blackthorn took what should be a system of ethics, where each individual has freedom to choose his or her path, and turned it into an oppressive and cruel system, without freedom of choice. Failure to obey the virtues meant severe punishment under Blackthorns rule. If you read the Code of Virtues below you will see that attempting to enforce them by law has simply corrupted the virtues and, all that they should stand for. Basically, under Blackthorns law you lose both ways, there is no compassion or justice in his laws. In many of his laws you can die if you obey the law, and get killed if you don't, typical government! Lord Blackthorn's Code of Virtue 1. Thou shalt not lie, or thou shalt lose thy tongue. 2. Thou shalt help those in need, or thou shalt suffer the same need. 3. Thou shalt fight to the death if challenged, or thou shalt be banished as a coward. 4. Thou shalt confess to thy crime and suffer its just punishment, or thou shalt be put to death. 5. Thou shalt donate half of thy income to charity, or thou shalt have no income. 6. If thou dost lose thine own honour, thou shalt take thine own life. 7. Thou shalt enforce the laws of virtue, or thou shalt die as a heretic. 8. Thou shalt humble thyself to thy superiors, or thou shalt suffer their wrath. THE SHADOWLORDS There are three Shadowlords, Nosfentor the Shadowlord of Cowardice, Astaroth the Shadowlord of Hatred, and Faulinei the Shadowlord of Falsehood. Each Shadowlord represents the anti principle of one of the three principles of Truth, Love and Courage. Nosfentor, Cowardice opposes Courage Astaroth, Hatred opposes Love Faulinei, Falsehood opposes Truth The Shadowlords arose from the broken shards of Mondain's dark gem, which had lain undiscovered in the underworld for many years. The Shadowlords are able to travel to different parts of Britannia very quickly, appearing and disappearing seemingly at will. Though it is not known how they do this possible explanations would be some kind of magic, or an ability to travel through the ether. Now to the million dollar question, how did the Shadowlords get their names, what do they mean? The only one I've been able to come up with is that theres a Duke of Hell called Astaroth, he features in some fictional books. So I suppose that is a possible explanation, unless anyone has a better answer ![]() Quite often when you enter a town you will find that it is under attack by a Shadowlord, though you can enter a town while a shadowlord is there, you must be very careful. Generally the Shadowlord will be near the centre of town, avoid him unless you have a death wish. Also, according to which Shadowlord is in town the behaviour of the citizens is affected: If Astaroth, Lord of Hatred is in town people will hit you. If Faulinei, Lord of Falsehood is in town people will steal from you. If Nosfentor, Lord of Cowardice is in town people will refuse to talk to you, except to beg you not to hurt them. In many ways its best to wait till a Shadowlord leaves and then enter town, as it's a nuisance when gold just vanishes or your hit points go down. The Shadowlords are creatures of great evil, whoever is near them is affected by the evil forces from them. When a Shadowlord is in a town all the citizens of that town are affected. Such is the evil of these foul creatures that even the trees and grass where they walk die. Springing back to life once the Shadowlord has gone. If you use a telescope to look at the night sky, you can see 8 planets, in addition to the twin moons, Trammel and Fellucca. Each planet represents a town, if a comet is near the planet of a town, then that town is under attack by a Shadowlord. DESTROYING THE SHADOWLORDS To destroy the Shadowlords you must recover the three shards of Mondains gem from the underworld, and discover the name of each of the Shadowlords. The shard of hatred lies in the underworld beneath the dungeons Wrong and Covetous. The shard of cowardice is in the underworld beneath the dungeon Hythloth. The shard of falsehood is beneath the dungeon Deceit. The journey into the underworld is a perilous one, make sure you take plenty of supplies. You will also need to be told the name of each Shadowlord: Lord Malone in Serpents Hold knows the name of Shadowlord of Cowardice. Lord Shalineth of the Lycaeum has the name of Shadowlord of Falsehood. Sin'vraal in the desert west of Dagger Isle knows the name of Shadowlord of Hatred. To destroy the Shadowlord of Cowardice, take the shard of cowardice to the Flame of Courage at Serpents Hold. Note it's a good idea to save your game now, just in case anything goes wrong. Face the flame, and call the name of Shadowlord of Cowardice, Nosfentor. When Shadowlord appears wait for it to step into flame of courage, and then throw shard of cowardice into flame of courage. That's one shadowlord dealt with! To destroy the other two, do the same, at the Lycaeum for Shadowlord of Falsehood, and Empath Abbey for Shadowlord of Hatred. Making sure to use correct shard, and summon correct Shadowlord. " Silva's Ultima Site, Index Last edited by Pitr; 23rd March 2008 at 03:24 PM.. |

Jeremy Dallberg 27 Mar 2008 17:25:49 EST “After initially losing funding from the Mage’s Council in Moonglow, progress on the "blackrock detection machine" resumed late last month with government intervention, and is finally nearing completion. Despite fears of the dangers involved in working with the still-mysterious substance, officials agree on the necessity of knowing where it is. Captain Avery, of the militia, made the following statement:" To read more, visit the Britannia News Network here: For more information about the event, see below: Event occurs over two days
