Most people who play guardsmen/commoners know that their character concept in and of itself isn't interesting, so have to develop a consistent personality and set of traits to go along with their character. On the other hand, people who play out of the ordinary characters sometimes assume that their being different terms of race, language etc is enough to justify a complete lack of uniqueness in the more important parts of their character.
What's hard for anyone no matter what role they play is making their character interesting; speaking a different language or being a different race isn't going to ensure that on any deep level, only superficially. Frankly, all the memorable characters i've encountered have had very common roles but were played in a really creative way.
