I sell things for what I consider to be a reasonable price based on the situation. I will sell items for below market price if I want a quick turn over. I will sell items for market price if I think the item is worth it. For items I don't know about, I let people make offers. I sold an item the other day for a price far above what I was expecting based on the other person's offer. I have no problems with direct honest in-game commerce since it can be a lot of fun.

Personally, I wouldn't sell items for too far below the market price because I've seen people get burned. I remember a friend sold a house years ago when even a small was hard to get for far less than it was worth because the other player gave her a sob story. A week later he resold it for a profit. People will often resell items you sell too cheaply. Also, sometimes it undercuts other players who are selling at a reasonable price. For example, scripters really mess things up for miners and lumberjacks because no honest player can compete with someone selling for a fraction of the price. However, I don't believe your small acts of charity will ever be as detrimental.

I also tend to avoid giving too much away to other players because of what happened with my brother. I managed to get my brother to start playing a few years back (gave him a copy for Christmas). I helped get him a house, gave him armor, weapons, powerscrolls, etc. and helped him raise skill. He didn't get into the game because everything was handed to him. He let that house collapse. On the other hand, I have a friend who I got interested in the game, but since we have different playstyles, we never interacted much. He still plays and built his own fortune and guild. There was a sense of achievement for him that made the game have value.
