Quintessetial Wizard?
My mage template:
Str 95 Dex 30 Int 115 ---------- Total 240 Magery 110 Eval Int 100 Inscrip 100 Medi 100 R.Spells 100 Parry 100 Wrest 90 -------------- Total 700 I figure this is the quintessential wizard. I was thinking of putting wrestling on a stone and learning alchemy, however; I use a scrapper's conpendium and arcane shield so I can't use potions. Still alchemy would be nice for making posions for my dexxer and explosions for trapping with my tinker, but I don't know if its worth the cost (soul stones) or effort when I can just buy kegs from vendors a lot cheaper then s. stones and regs. Thoughts, suggestions, critisms welcome. ie Maybe a stat tweak? |

Re: Quintessetial Wizard?
PvM mostly...However I would like to be able to assist in or at least hold my own in PvP. Have not done much PvP yet, but it seems like its all poison dexxers running around on fast mounts.

Re: Quintessetial Wizard?
pvm stone off parry and cap out everything else....pvp rethink entire template imo a pure mage cannot even hold a little of their own. Necro/mage seems to be the hot caster for pvp.
others more pvp oriented should be along shortly to give you some better advice! Last edited by merth; 10th January 2008 at 06:15 PM. |

Re: Quintessetial Wizard?
I have only been playing very causually and mostly solo for about 4 months. Is parry not worth it (I think 16% block) with such low dex and with high wrestling (I do use protect spell and try like hell not to get hit). Also, does going above 100 inscription increase spell damage above 10%?

Re: Quintessetial Wizard?
Your template seems a little odd for a mage.
If you are looking for a "true" mage the template is as follows 120 mage eval resists med wrestling GM inscribe str: 110 dex 20 int 125 (stats naked without suit) this temp is great for pvp or pvm because it provides max sdi (counting a few items IE hat of the magi and a pendant), also you can use wrestling specials to disarm and stun dexxers or other mages. Another thing is if you build your suit right you can run a shield and no book and be able to chug pots. Also this temp will allow you to have an extra 10% sdi when you are stacking it for pvm (pvm sdi is not capped) As for your current template parry is doing nothing for you because you do not have 80 dex so iI would suggest to drop it in favor of higher mage skills or maybe spellweaving or something of the sorts. If you want more variety of mage templates feel free to ask and I'll give you an assortment of them when I get back later. Vally |

Re: Quintessetial Wizard?
I thought you also needed 90+ tactics for wrestle disarm/stun. Furthermore wrestle is just a defensive skill (or so I thought), no real use execpt to prevent hits when enemies get too close.
Whats the benefit of going above 100 inscription? Thought spell damage for that skill caps at 10%. (I am a newb...could be wrong) Also, is there not a total spell damage skill cap (100%?), like there is for melee (again, -or so I thought). Is not parry a great skill for mages since it prevents hits and allows you to not use the protection spell for better resists? Resist spells seems to be a waste (imo), at least for pvm. I don't know a lot about pvp, but; in pvm it seems the only thing resist spells is good for is preventing paralyzation. The str/int/dex debuffs are minimal-to-pointless. Why not take a enough chiv to just cast 'remove curse' reliably and use the remainder for elder/lengendary stats? |

Re: Quintessetial Wizard?
wrestle also lets you get your spells off without being interrupted, 100 is max for inscription to get full benefit, resist is pretty much a waste for pvm imo only when you need the room for other skills

Re: Quintessetial Wizard?
90 tactics is only needed when pairing with fencing, swords, macing and archery. Wrestling is outstanding for def. and good for offense. I say this because with wrestling you don't need tactics plus you have the ability to stun and disarm both of which are great specials against almost all templates. As far as not being able to get disrupted with wrestling that is not true the only true way to not be disrupted is while casting in protection.
Merth is correct that the inscription cap is 100, but I will add that the inscription bonus (+10 sdi) is only granted at GM inscribe. This means that having only 90 inscribe does NOT give you 9 sdi. When I'm talking about no cap on sdi that is purely for PVM only, the cap on sdi is for pvp is 15% for items and +10% for GM scribe. Parry is not a good skill for a mage anymore purely because you have to have 80 dex for the parrying skill to properly work. Having 80 dex on a mage is just not practical unless you have a crazy suit allowing you to devote that much to dex without hurting str and int. Resisting spells is probably one of the most underrated skills by many. PvM or PvP resisting spells helps a ton. With resisting spells you can't be para'd, it is much hard to get poisoned, you can not be mana drained or mana vamped, it also gives your char "natural armor." At 120 resist you have 44 in each armor resist, however this is not a base you build from it merely means that if say your suit only has 25 poison you will show/act like you have 44. Once your suit passes that 44 it will raise like normal and act accordingly. The curse/damage over time spells like strangle and even the strength of certain spells are based purely off a characters resisting spells. I say no to chiv mainly because 2/6 chiv is to slow to be effective. If you are worried about removing curse just carry apples on you and make a UOA macro to eat one. Yes I know there is a timer on eating them but it is worth putting those extra skill points else where. Vally |

Re: Quintessetial Wizard?
Thanks for your post, and I will take your advice in respect to RS and parry. Also, I did not know RS helps agianst posion attacks, ty. However, as far as wrestling goes, don't you need 70-90 tactics to work the disarm/para? It tells me when I try that I do. Does wrestling help prevent hits...I use protection, but it has such a massive debuff (and I try not to get hit anyway) that it seems better to not use protection since the hits I get are few and far between (exception are creatures that do bleed/poison/rage attacks), and the extra phys resist is very helpful.

Re: Quintessetial Wizard?
If you are going PvM then I would use the following. This is the template that I run and it kicks butt in Doom and anyother peerless.
My cap is at 705 Necro 110 Sprint Speak 120 Magery 120 Eval Intel 120 Spellweaving 115 Med 120 Now I have not completed with this templete I am at 110s on everything just waiting for the gold to come in to build up in my bank box. My thinking is if you are using a mage for PvM you need and must have Spellweaving. With a level 5 focus and casting word of death you will do 435 plus damage per cast. You can't beat that.
