Ya what Dip said! Any gm miner has the ability to find gems. The finding is completely random and can come from any type ore spot which they apparently are all any type now. Elves have a slightly better chance of finding them! Shovel/pick can be set to ore or ore and stone makes no difference. The crafting with them is unique to each recipe that uses it. If you have the skill to make the recipe (and you have "learned" the recipe) then you can use the gems.
