Am I the only one really let down by this event? Feeble effort, team.

source

"The budget of the movie was reputed to be eight figures. I guess that was in pesos, or they spent a couple mill on the wrap party... because I sure don't see it up on the screen" - some forgotten movie review.

This is the nub of my dissatisfaction, I think you hit it on the head there, Numb.

For all the hewing, hawing, delays, spin and hype, this event SUCKS. This is nothing but the Doom Gauntlet in a new setting. I do Doom regularly and it wasnt 4 minutes before I started feeling like this was all awwwfully familiar.

Last year we had the Grim Reaper -- who would appear at different times in different cemetaries. There was a fun factor there, not just a campfest.

"This affects the UO History Timeline!" SO WHAT? Let's look at this in the only factor that matters for a subscription-based game (that's supposed to keep you entertained): Was it innovative? Was it new? Was it fresh?

This isn't innovative. It isn't new. And it sure as hell isn't fun. It's the same old crap that a company who had their act together MIGHT throw together to placate folks the very day before.

Instead it took a month.

UO's death has already begun. And its halfass crap like this (a tradition with this team) that is gonna speed up its demise.

As always, my humble two cents as a paying customer.

(Edited to move up my further musings since I editted the title)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have to agree with a lot of what you said. Last years Grim Reaper event was much more fun for me, all of us running around Brit Bank being chased by Grim was hilarious. The lag at Magincia for many people is so bad that they can't get anywhere near the spawn, seems a shame when we were all looking forward to this event. Also it doesn't seem to start until around 11pm on Europa and that's when I am usually heading to bed.
~~~~

Caesar IV.... now that's a 3D game interface that makes Kingdom Reborn look fast and efficient. Just thinking about playing that game gives me a headache. It would be cool in UO though if the townsfolk walked about and did purposeful activities like those city builder games.

~~~~
Oh, come on now, don't you like the "You have to click seventeen times to place so we're sure you REALLY mean it" (tm) Interface???
~~~~

Well, I only spent 15 minutes there last night, but it didn't impress me in the slightest. Heck, I didn't even get to see a demon. I only have around an hour a night to play games, and I'm sure as heck not going to spend it staring at a moongate that has EV's spammed all over it and 30 players plus thier pets standing around waiting for something to happen. Instead I logged out and played a game that I could immediately start playing and didn't need to try to compete with 30+ other players to get to the uber l33t l00t.

And I do agree about how it is lame that they keep appearing in the same place over and over. I have the same complaint about alot of spawns in the game (Swoop especially comes to mind). How darn hard would it have been to have the demons pop up anywhere on the island? They could even have thier own "corrupted moongate" pop up where they are spawnning to keep the flavor aspect.

In general, it just looked like swoop to the 10th power: Hoards of camping and waiting. Wow, fun.

I didn't have much lag issues, tho. Movement and drawing was fine, but the item properties of stuff laying around did take 5-10 seconds to pop up. So if that is what people are taking about, I could live with that.

~~~~
No, I think it's you.....Here's what I see, you get an event and you b**ch.
Sure craps broken, in a perfect world it wouldn't be would it?
You players get this, get that, and there's always some poor sap whose not happy and then displays displeasure, online, for all to see the true child within.....be happy with what you have,
Don't like it, quit, most losers do.
~~~~

I agree UO doesn't need an overly negative attitude from the fanbase, but a spade's a spade.

This event does not live up to the hype.

It's not imaginatively done at all. Again, it's the Doom Gauntlet that happens to take place in a city. Compared to last year, it's really phoned in.

~~~~
I think the true "child within" is evident here by you insulting me for posting my opinion. Maybe you'll realize when you get older how that doesn't impress anybody.
Giving monsters the ability to literally tear down piece by piece an entire city and turn it into a heap of rubble sounds pretty innovative, at least for UO.
When Yew or Haven were destroyed, the outcome of the damage was completely predetermined and the result was identical on all shards...
Maybe it's not fun for you, but at least you should give Draconi credit for adding something new.
You weren't around for the Invasion of Trinsic, were you?
Same thing.
~~~~

I *was* around for the Invasion of Trinsic, actually, and I don't remember any kind of dynamic destruction. Just undead. Lots and lots of undead. And drinking. (Invasions are more fun when you can hang out in a pub between waves )

Actually, I mean that it was different on each shard. We held it on Napa for a few weeks... the outcome was different based on the shard. Sir Bolo was implying letting each shard handle the event as they would and their futures be affected -- that was the same (and should be done a lot more often). So in that respect, this is not new.

I know my post was pretty muckraking, and probably overtly negative. But to me, this event just is taking Doom and putting it in a new location. This is the FOURTH invasion in this game, and killing waves and waves of monsters just to get a chance to loot an uber cool item (the exact same thing in each of the last 3 invasions) just is another case of Been There, Done That for me.

I wouldn't be NEARLY as disappointed if the Halloween event last year (which really took me by surprise with its fun factor and accessibility to ALL characters, not just the best fighters -- and the Grim Reaper bit was a fresh twist) wasn't so good.

But this feels so phoned in.

And folks, your mileage may vary.

~~~~
I like it
Its dangerous. Its deadly.
Spawn is really random. Yeah sometimes lag city.
Other times tuff monsters and not tons of spawn.
I am mad I cant find rubble. I am mad no one will sell it.
But as far as I can tell, its a good event.
And Im not sure how you all can judge it before its done.
Lag has effected every invasion, in UO.
Anyway, Im buying rubble.
Or trading berserkers scythes for rubble.
My only suggestion is having a chance for random rubble be on any monster. That would be fun. What do you think Devs?
That would be cool.
Be it is a selfish request. I WANT RUBBLE.
~~~~

Well PrinceCaspian, I'm sure there was some point to your post ... what with renaming and bumping it and all ...
surely there was some point to your post .... it eludes me though ....
Perhaps it was the "lead in" with a quote from numb ... Oh! I get the segue ... critiqueing "the invasion" ... yeah yeah .... what a surprise that "anyone" in the hall is going to be "critical" of anything .. tis so rare

humph! Recent quips by Draconi would seem to indicate your disappointment is ....premature ...would seem to indicate ....

*shrugs*

"The Point" however still eludes me .... your certainly not the "first" in many many catagories ... nor the best/worst OF those catagories ...
and from the general "tone" of your post ... you just had some time to waste ... or feelings to share ... or ...practice? something

Maybe the "lack of direction", I'm sensing, lay in the fault of the hall in general ... Theres been no actual "push" to work out the riddle of the "how what why when where" ...

Of "the invasion" ...just a complacent acceptence that it is JUST (yet again) another Holiday event ...

Surely .... thats all both are... the forums and events ...

Surely ... theres nothing more than what is ... now ...

All knowlege is known and thus till the end of time tick tock tick tock tick tock tick tock ...
Surely ... theres nothing more

Have to agree with the OP.

I went to Magincia for all of 3 seconds and felt the same way.

During my "dumping" in Luna and Tokuno, there were several people following me around (ok, they were picking up my goodies! It was Halloween, or around it) and just about every single one of them asked these questions, in this order:

1) "Are you quitting?"

My reply: "Yes"

2) "Why?"

My reply: "Why not?"

3) "..."

My reply: "no answer? can't give me one reason to keep playing?"

4) "lol"

My reply: "Exactly"

Im going to have to disagree with you based on the people in alantic they seem to be having a great time saving the city. And i think your Comments are just really based on your personal opion or if you feel it is necessary poll it but the event is what it says it it not doom in a a diffrint envirment . if a city is overrun with dragons would that be destard in another envirerment no it is what it is like it or not, play or dont play, but dont discourage others who actually still enjoy the play in uo.

The event is fun and sucky at the same time. I know that is a "Clintonesque" position to take, but it's true. It's really fun to fight those tough mobs with a group of folks. But they should have spawned in greater numers and in different places in the city. From what I saw and encountered, everyone huddled around the black moongate and waited. Once some stuff spawned everyone jumped on it. That's great and all but there was way too much fire imo. Fire + lag + blackrock infected DF= (OOooOOOooOoooo. ooO oOO oOOOO ooo)3x+9y(ooOOoo)to the third power.
King Tony, that avatar is gonna give me a seizure. hehe

Thank you Kingtony! I agree with you 100%. I am no Doom expert but I have been a few times and other then the DF spawning in this envasion I have never seen any of the other demons spawn in Doom.

The comparison isn't about the DF, it could be any other spawn.

It's about doing "The Gauntlet" and how it is similar to how the invasion is on top of it being similar to invasions of the past.

I was having fun without even playing, just watching my hubby play in Mag Fel last night.

If only the Doom DF drops 2 arties everytime, we've got a pretty nice collection now. And the scythes.

I would have to agree with Tony about the Atlantic, we have lots of fun there... I have more fun in fel then tram. However I have only been playing UO for 14 months, so I am not sure about past events. My first event was last halloween with the grim (which I thought was the greatest thing that I ever did even to this date)...I was not able to do the tokuno invasion. So I am going off of the dark wisp invasion. I am having a blast.
