Sosarian Plumbing?
So I've been reworking my house lately, and with the new design I wanted to stay within the times or era or world(s) or whatever...I got to thinking about bathrooms.
It seems that toilets have become common place within residantial Sosarian homes, this made me question the validity of this, based on the towns I figured that plumbing as sophisticated as a tank with handle and bowl doesn't fit the times. There are other bathroom related objects in accuall existance, but no toilet. What do you all think about this? Am I correct in my assumtion or does the existance of magic overrule everything? And how about taps with running water? Last edited by Ging; 9th July 2007 at 02:56 PM. |

Re: Sosarian Plumbing?
I think it depends mostly on the theme of the person's house... but if you're actually talking about whether or not the time setting would have plumbing... I'd have to say no. This due simply because I can't ever recall seeing any NPC building with any type of running water... just my two cents.

Re: Sosarian Plumbing?
Thats true but then it leads to the question, why do we have sewers?

Re: Sosarian Plumbing?
Primitive sewers have been around for hundreds of years... They were not used for the flow and access of water but rather the removal of waste and filth, simply as a run off so it did not lay in the streets.

Re: Sosarian Plumbing?
The question really depends on what kind of historical accuracy you're hoping to achieve. Romans did in fact have running water, and sophisticated sewage systems; but after the fall of Rome and they left Europe, most European states devolved into very primitive sewage systems with standing water for 1,000 years. The Black Death and Tuburculosis were so common because there was literally raw sewage and plagues of rats in the roads and houses.
So if you want to be based strictly on history, then no, the time period that UO takes place in would not have running water or toilets. You'd dump your waste into a bedpan or in the back garden. But as UO is fantasy, you can reckon that in this world, formally stupid Europeans actually learned technology from the Roman occupation and kept it going instead of devolving. In that case, having toilets and running water in UO's time period is completely feasible. It is also feasible to say that public town buildings wouldn't necessarily have toilets in them, because they are built for common people, but wealthy home owners would as they could afford the technology. Depends on what you want really hehe. Last edited by Pandajuice; 12th July 2007 at 07:31 AM. |

Re: Sosarian Plumbing?
Of course you can have toilets and running water if you want to, I'm not trying to limit anyone gaming exprience. I think when I said "times" people are getting the wrong impression. Since Sosaria, as far as I know, is not a geographic region on planet earth, we ought not say that the romans invaded it. What I wanted to draw the conclusions from was in the in game technology/history. As people said before, Britain has sewers and water fountains, which would require plumbing, are they any other in game clues in favor or opposed to plumbing.
And Jakar would agree, lol, bubonic plague and tuberculosis are not spead by poor sanitation. |

Granted, TB isn't spread by poor sanitation, but the bubonic plague probably was (at least according to the most popular theory) as it was carried by fleas which were carried by rats and humans. |

Hygiene played the other main roll. Washing your hands was simply not even considered at the time. So, after someone would go to the bathroom, they'd continue doing whatever work they did and risking infection to anyone else who came in contact with them. Isn't that what Seinchna taught us Ging? haha |

Re: Sosarian Plumbing?
Bubonic plague is not spread from person to person. Small rodents such as rats, mice, and squirrels carry the infection. Fleas that live on these animals become infected, too, so people may get the bacteria from flea bites or from direct contact with an infected animal.
Two people were hospitalized in 02 in NY with it yuck. |
