To the EA/Mythic team.
source taken from UO U.Hall
I have one question on my mind atm, why did you guys/gals decide to redo the origional UO instead of making a superior UO2 (one that could actually kick some serious ass if built upon the lessons of 10 years of UO and the vast world this is). Was it because thats all EA would allow you to do? Did you think redoing UO was a better idea? I would love to hear the reasoning behind this. (this isn't a troll, its an honest question) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ They wanted to make a 3d version of UO and let everyone keep their stuff. NO one would want to start over in a game that takes so much “work” to get your skill’s up. They wanted to keep the current sub’s and add new one’s. I think ;P. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1. UOKR isn't 3D. 2. UO2 would have been a golden oppertunity to redo how skills are trained, making it a more fun experience. 3. Making UO2 wouldn't have meant the loss of UO, people can still play their old stuff and have fun with it, look at lineage I and Lineage II, thats exactly what they did there and up until WoW came along it was a great success. 4. Making UO2 would have allowed them to keep their subscribers of UO, while getting lots of more subscribers for UO2 (because UO2 would be vastly superior to UOKR) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Quote:
5. Would have taken pretty close to the same amount of time , a litte more costly probably , but well worth it.. 6. Could be alot less exploiting. 7. Well we could see this on the 20th anni. Side note : I'm surprised EA marketing didnt label UOKR as UO2.. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ... The way I see it, an MMOG should NEVER need a sequel because it is meant to be a PERSISTENT game. There's no "end" to the book like a single player RPG, thus no reason to have a sequel. Simply upgrade the client content and technology-wise and keep going. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A sequel doesn't mean the end of it, look at Lineage I and EQ1, both games still going despite sequels were made. UO is the first MMORPG to do this major change to their client, sadly what they're ending up with is a client that pisses off half the client base and really isn't up to par with current games, especially considering no attempts to fix the underlying issues of the game has really been made. A sequel could fix both, make a proper client (no more worries about backwards compatibility), allow for a complete do-over of the systems in UO and correct many of the mistakes there have been made over the years by different teams and put UO2 back into a single vision instead of being a mess of visions spanning 10 years. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Were someone to greenlight a sequel to UO, I would be very, VERY surprised if it were close enough to UO to be able to make the comparison between it and a new client. It would be a new game - maybe better, maybe worse, maybe it would have your favorite aspect, maybe it wouldn't - but it wouldn't be UO. The two ideas just aren't the same at all. E. Jeremy Dalberg UO Community Coordinator EA Mythic ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Oh it probably wouldn't be close at all, new system and different UI, but it would give the chance of a do-over of a lot of the mistakes done in UO and still preserve the UO world and perhaps even a lot of the feel of it, just like for instance EQ->EQ2 Lineage->Lineage2. And also, many current players feel that UOKR isn't really UO anymore either But I was essentially more interested in hearing what brought the decision about to do UOKR instead of UO2, or was no thoughts done on that matter? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sequels are for standalone single person games. The idea of a sequel to an online game is a waste of time and effort, and you just end up screwed like AC or EQ competing with yourself. An online game is it's own sequel. Think about this, for just a minute...the game's look can be updated with new clients periodically to keep it "fresh". But the server behind that is another matter entirely. Spec out everything that UO has in it...from combat to crafting to plants and aquariums...and see what a dev team would have to do to get to that point if they started all over again from scratch. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ EA should have invested in Ultima Iris. Absolutely hands down better then KR. It is true 3D Still looks exactly like UO Works 100% with the existing map. and so on and so on ![]() ![]() now if KR was anything like this I would toss my beloved 2D out the window ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi, Jeremy. The thing is, it's not the client that is important to keep. it's the houses, the characters, the skills, the monsters, etc. Other games (above mentioned) do a fine job of putting housing into a 3D client with full point of view control and zooming in and out from any direction. If EA did that with UO, whew that'd be awesome. The other game can zoom out to have characters the size of UO but from any angle, and it can zoom in to get sharp details of everything. I know UOKR tried to do that, but I see now that it didn't go far enough. It doesn't have a free movement camera angle, and it is terribly difficult to use compared to UO2D. That's just my opinion, of course. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So what do UOForum members think....[tabby]..?

Re: To the EA/Mythic team.
I keep my 2D personally. I can't play 3D games like that without getting nausea. Plus, this is the UO I know and love, not some other wanna be.

I admit and dont really care if i get banned... When i was as most active in pvp and before... the first 5 years of UO. I was member of Askchopper and had access to all the "goodies"? there was.. + we even found out some even better ourself. You'd be amazed what hides in this client.. old one. Examples... How many dupe bugs have been so far? I count 10 that i know of. Fixed now. House looting bugs.... i count 13.. some of those lasting over years same goes for the dupe. Hair dye programs.. yes the 50gp neon dye program took them ages to fix.. why? The client is a mess.. These are just some of the big bugs i mention... But they are enough and shows that they need a new client. Since every big patch brings new of these bugs i just mentioned... Why? Its a mess .... Im sure a UO designer will agree with me when i say that. The clear my own head a bit.. I dont do anything of this anymore since AoS atleast ... I just Roleplay and enjoy the game I once liked. Re: To the EA/Mythic team.
Even though I love 2d. I am interested in the progress of KR. The only reason I dont use KR is its laggy and works like junk and non compatible with many computers out there. But... I like good graphics and I like the fact KR and 2d will exist together for the next 5-10 years. I would like to be able to play in 2d then suddenly switch to a sweet 3d and look at my house in a three dimensional envorinment that would be kewl. Of course 2d is the classic and to me a very highly advanced system even though it looks old. I have not pl;ayed a game with the click and drag type item grabbing like this ever. Major props to the old Origin team who made this game they truly did somthing great.
