Grog Memorial Service - - Images.

Grog's Memorial Service was well attended:

Queen Mum presided:

Members of Grog's real-life family attended: his wife Ruby and his son Hans:

Everyone was well behaved, although the memorial book kept disappearing.

Another book was locked down at the Grog Museum, which the family said will be maintained.

I miss my friend Grog.

Rest In Peace, Grog.

Re: Grog Memorial Service - - Images.

For those who were not able to attend and who asked for a copy of the service ....
Quote:
We are honored to have in attendance with us today members from Grog's real life family.
His loving and dedicated wife Ruby, and son Hans.

Understand the Moment:

Opening:

We gather here to claim memories which are forever sacred,
as they are a precious gift of life.
We are supported by a faith stronger than death,
sustained by the hope of a life
that extends eternally beyond this place.

If we have been pleased with life,
we should not be displeased with death,
since it comes from the hand
of the same master. ~Michelangelo

God, we come today as people whose lives have been
abruptly changed by the death of one whom we deeply love.
This change has brought confusion, anger, loneliness, fear,
and doubt. In the midst of these varied emotions,
we long for peace and for endurance. We want to feel Your presence.

May the memories of precious moments shared,
sustain us in this time of grief.
May those times of laughter and crying,
joy and sorrow, energy and fatigue,
conflict and peace which mark our history with this beloved
individual be the foundation of hope which sends us into tomorrow.
Amen

Message of Hope:

Humanity needs to have hope in something beyond our time and place.
We must have hope. Hope is that which allows us to carry on with dignity.
In this setting today, we need hope.
In the midst of grief, we need a vision that goes beyond the moment.

The Creator gives us that hope in the reality of a future life.
Johns Gospel reminds us, "In my Fathers house are many mansions;
I go to prepare a place for you."
We are also reminded in Scripture that "No eye has seen,
no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what the Creator has
prepared for those who love Him."

So we gather here not to mourn the end of a life,
but to celebrate the transition from one life to another.
In this setting there is always sadness and grief.
These emotions are a legitimate response to loss.
Let us lift our hearts to the Spirit who is our hope.
In so doing, we claim the hope that death represents,
not the end of life but actually its beginning.

An unknown author wrote the Poem OF Life ...

Life is but a stopping place,
A pause in what's to be,
A resting place along the road,
to sweet eternity.
We all have different journeys,
Different paths along the way,
We all were meant to learn some things,
but never meant to stay...
Our destination is a place,
Far greater than we know.
For some the journey's quicker,
For some the journey's slow.
And when the journey finally ends,
We'll claim a great reward,
And find an everlasting peace,
Together with the lord.
---

Without hope we could not exist. Life would be unbearable.
But because of Grace, we have a hope that takes us not only
through this present crisis but also through all of life.
We are thankful for the hope that is ours in life and death.

Benediction:

From whom all blessings flow, we come in need of blessing.
You and You alone know our broken hearts; You know our grief.
Our strength is depleted; our souls are bare; our feelings are numb.
We realize that life is a race. Give us strength to run in faith,
for those that have run before us we offer our gratitude.
Bless their memory as we follow their example toward the time.

It is not length of life, but depth of life. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

On July 2, 2003 in reference to the question of 'Where did you get your characters name?'

Grog posted the following:

"Long ago (about 1967) as an apprentice patternmaker some of my coworkers were intrigued
by my capacity for the consumption of almost anything (at that time only food and/or beer).
As I was overweight (tending to roundness) and hairy (full beard and longish hair) I was given
a nickname that came from the BC comic strip; Grog.
The nickname stuck, and after 27 years of marriage my wife still calls me Grog.

When I first started in UO I naturally chose Grog as a name.
A short time into my gameplay I ran across a player that used various names that included Daz.
He had a miner Daz, carpenter Daz, etc.
Since I thought that was an interesting idea I named each of my characters Grog as I created them.

I decided my game goal was to spread my name as much as possible. That set my goals to GM each
and every craft skill such that I could make and mark everything with my name.

I have been able to do that for some time now. Have fun."

And on May 20, 2007 he penned:

Grog, His Story...

"Long ago there came to Sosaria a man named Grog.
He found the land to be fine and settled in a shard called Great Lakes.
He soon had a son and as Grog is a perfectly fine name, he named his son Grog.

When he had a second son he knew that Grog was still a fine name so
that son also was named Grog. And so it went...

Today there are over 60 Brothers_Grog in the Grog Guild
representing every known shard of the shattered Gem.
The main quarters of the Grog guild is in the very fine shard of Catskills.
There are also Cousins_Grog in every shard and they are Grog guilded
as is a lone Second Cousin_Grog in the Catskills shard.
There is a Sister named Cayenne and on the Cousin side there is
a lone female with the name of Ruby (RL wife's name).
It is rumored that Ruby is an elf.

The Brothers had built a home in Great Lakes but
when a better home became available in Catskills (gift from friends)
they gladly gave away their cabin and Crafter Grog moved the Grog treasures to Catskills
to join that branch of the family. Recently the Cousins came along and
they built a small building in Catskills as well.
Very recently along came a Second Cousin who also built a structure.

The three buildings of Grog now comprise the Grog Village.
If one starts at the pyramid in the Malas desert and travels east
they will soon come upon the Grog home.
The rest of the Village is the next two buildings directly to the North East.

The lower building is the living quarters for the Grogs.
The middle building is the Grog Warehouse.
And the upper building is the brand new Grog Guildhouse.
All the building are open to friends and strangers alike.
There may be found a small number of vendors that sell off quite cheaply
whatever is brought home. As an example all treasure maps are sold
at the flat rate of 100 gold pieces.

The Grog Guildhouse is rapidly becoming the showplace of the family.
All locked down containers are available for all to look through.
If one looks about the Guildhouse carefully there are a few small surprises
to amuse and befuddle most visitors.

The Guildhouse is a work in progress and will continue to grow."

In closing, he signed it: "You don't have to be insane to work here, but it helps."

Then Brothers_Grog sent an invitation on June 8, 2007
to everyone for a 'Friday breakfast... Sorta'...

"*Sets out a couple kegs of ale, some bottles of wine (cheap)
and several bottles of liquor*
I am at the Grog Guildhouse. If you want to eat there is food on the tables.
A lot of meat and even some fruit *shudder* for the "wimps" amongst us.
If you look closely you will see that the Brothers provide food in quite ample quantities.
Enjoy! If not breakfast then how about a late party? Either way I am into it!"

That was his last communication with us in the UO world.

Grog will be deeply missed, as he shared so much with the UO community.
A fellow player expressed so eloquently how we all feel about Grog,
"He was known by many, and loved by all."

Almighty Spirit, at a time when we are acutely aware of the death of a loved one,
we thank You for Your living presence with us. Your unfailing companionship with us
gives us comfort for today and courage for tomorrow. Help us to see all of lifes experiences
as within Your control. There is rhythm to the natural order.

Most of all, we are thankful that the routine and order does not rule out Your workings in our lives.
Within Your order we have received and now give up this our friend.
Bless the inheritance left behind by this dear soul but
most of all the inheritance of One in whose name we gather.
Give us grace to trust in Your wisdom which is above and beyond all mysteries.
Teach us to rely upon You in moments of peace and when the unexplainable storms blow.
Amen.

CLOSING:

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart,
and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Almighty and everlasting Spirit, the comforter of those who mourn,
the strength of those who are weak, lift us up upon the wings of your
eternal promise as we reflect upon the words we have heard
and as we contemplate our own relationship with your Spirit.

Where there is doubt, put faith. Where there is misunderstanding provide wisdom.
Where there is guilt, pour out your forgiveness. Where there is fear, instill your peace.

We thank you for the good memories of the life we honor:

In Grog's own words,
"I am pleased my ramblings were good for you." May 31, 2007
"Grog rule #1: Have fun." June 6, 2007
And as it was, Grog's long-term goal ...
"To make the good name of Grog known everywhere"
it is now completed.

"He shall wipe all tears from their eyes, and there shall be no more death,
nor crying, nether shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

For God's finger touched him, and he slept. ~Alfred Lord Tennyson

Amen and Amen ... Blessed Be ... Always <><

This appears to be a great service, his memory will not dissapear. Unfortunately I did not know Grog but it is wonderful that so many people got to know him and paid respects in this memorial.
