[News] A Day In the Life - Kaelyn! Trinsic's Finest

Posted by callum fitzhugh Europa News Reporter for Stratics

A Day in the Life of an Undead Captain

A School Report,
By Keina Redwing. Aged 8 (nearly 9!)

For my research project I have chosen to study Miss. Kaelyn,
Trinsic’s Captain of the Guards. She has been captain
for one year now after the mysterious (aka treasonous!)
disappearance of Mr. Raven, the former captain.

First Some Background Information:

Where does “Undead” come into it you might ask? Well that is a long story; no actually it’s pretty short. Some undead fiends kidnapped and tortured the captain to death, but before anyone managed to bury her… she came back to LIFE! I swear on my soul that this is true and I’m not making it up! She came back to life even prettier and unscathed than when she departed her pained existence. I saw with my own two eyes, the captain who I consider a friend (even if she does turn out to be an undead) very much dead on one of the beds in the Trinsic healers, her body was burnt and bloody, I did not get an in-depth assessment before I was ushered out of the building (and nor did I want to) but I could tell for sure that she was dead, and many people at the time said it – even the Duke of Trinsic! And if anyone would know, he would. Everyone was very sad…

But!

The next day, I walked into the city, after just buying some flowers to place upon her grave-to-be actually, and who do I see?! Kaelyn! Quite alive (supposedly…) and well, even smiling and chatting to people that seemed to just accept guards coming back to life like it was an everyday occurrence! I challenged this, but everyone seemed to have gone mad, or perhaps I was the mad one for not believing people could just come back to life…

It has been two weeks since the captain’s rise from the dead and so far (as much to my knowledge) she hasn’t gone into a blood frenzy, howled at the moon or tried to eat anyone’s brains. But time will tell…

For my project I decided to interview Captain Kaelyn first hand to find out the details I needed, and I decided to follow her around a bit to get a first hand feel for what she does in a day. I also asked some Trinsicians their opinions of the captain and made some sketches to make my report look pretty.

My Interview With Captain Kaelyn:

Captain Kaelyn kindly agreed to an interview and we went to The Rose (a tavern just outside the City of Trinsic) for it. I asked her some questions about her life as a guard and as a captain; I found out that she is now 22 years old and has been in the guard force for 4 years and a captain for about 1 year. She became a guard because she did not want to get married to a miller and so ran away to become a mercenary protecting caravans, but as she was not skilled enough with a sword they laughed and turned her away. She told me that the Duke of Trinsic gave her a chance and took her on as a recruit in his guard force.

She went on to tell me that she likes the pay she receives as a captain, and I found out that she gets about sixteen hundred coins a month for her work and that she officially works about 10 hours a day but frequently works more, and at the mention of overtime she laughed!

“Sometimes ah think ah shoul' jus' arrest all ter have peace” she said to me at one point.

On asking her more about her promotion to captain, I found out that she is only captain until the Duke finds someone better. “well his Grace asked me ter accept it until some other Captain coul' be foun'” she told me, although I think perhaps the Duke is just stalling as he wants to keep Kaelyn in her position.

“So ...why the sudden diversion to the Virtues?” I asked her, slipping the question in quite unsubtly to steer the conversation, I might add. Her reply was: “Because ah was given a secon' chance an' was advised ter follow the virtues better… Ah was tol' ah got a new body all healed, ah nay even have the scars ah had before an' feel”

I then went on to ask her about her hobbies outside of her job; she told me she likes to eat cookies and that she is undecided on whether she will marry her long-term man-friend Tiggarn and that she hopes to have babies one day!

I asked her if she had anything to add that she wanted to put in my project: “ah hope yer get good marks on it an' ter behave ter make a guards life easier”

As I turned to leave after saying my farewells and my thanks, a man turned from the bar and addressed the captain with …

“Kaelyn. Thought you were dead?” – a very fitting ending I thought.

Some (Anonymous!) Quotes From The People of Trinsic:
“Hrm... Can be a bit annoying. Thinks she knows all about love…or other peoples love…thinks she knows all about other peoples love.”

“Kaelyn is one of the best captains we ever had”

“After her recent death, which brought the opportunity of a new Trinsic with it, a new Trinsic in the sense of it being able to become strong and independent, under the guidance of an able, confident new Captain; she somehow resurrected herself. It was bad enough that Undead creatures swarmed the forests, but now that they are taking over the Duchy themselves, what are we to do? I feel we are part of an evil plot that we do not fully grasp yet. Only time will tell.”

“She's a nice ah enough lass. And a good guard.”

“She has nice hair.”

“She is undead filth and is not fit to do the job she has! She should have been destroyed the moment she returned to town! Instead she has a second chance to exact her revenge on Trinsic! She is vindictive, spiteful and holds back any person who shows signs of promise!”

“I have only recently arrived to Trinsic, from what I have seen of the captain, she is polite, courteous and patient even in the face of the heavy weight bearing down on the Province.”

The Captain’s Day:

I followed Captain Kaelyn around for a while as much as I could without getting in the way, I saw her arrest somebody and I saw her politely direct new-comers to the city to where they needed to be.

(The usual warning doesn’t work as always,
but patience is a virtue after all)

(Kaelyn isn’t one to let the past stay in the
past when it comes to dangerous criminals…)

Captain Kaelyn’s days are vastly different from each other, some days they are quiet and some days they are very busy with just one thing after the other. But she does not just act on criminals and the likes; she also deals with the guards pay and trade licenses and things like that.

[center]My Conclusion:
I have come to a few conclusions throughout my report and I shall list them below:

1) I don’t want to be a captain when I grow up, it looks and sounds like more hassle than its worth, even if it does pay a lot!

2) Perhaps Kaelyn isn’t an evil, bloodsucking, brain-eating, soulless Undead intent on secretly turning the whole of Trinsic into vampires, warewolves or zombies but I still have my suspicions

3) I still think the Duke, her and Cal Soulshadow (who I were informed by a very …reliable… source have all gone through similar to Kaelyn!) have a secret cult, but what that cult’s goal is I do not know!

4) A captain’s job is a very demanding one and very important.

(A captain must be able to multitask well and calm the masses with ease)

-The End-
