I've been thinking of coming back to UO.
I have heard a rumor that when KR comes out, that all old, closed accounts will be purged from the system.
Does anyone know if this is true?
If it is true, how much time do I have to reopen my old accounts?

To the best of my knowledge, we have no such plans. If we ever do, it'll be in large print everywhere I can stick it, with as much warning as I can give you.

TY for squishing that 'rumor'

That rumor has been floating around for as long as I have been playing UO. Glad to see it is laid to rest for now!

I thought all accounts got purged after 90 days of being closed, so this is news to me

Nope the accounts have never been purged that I know of. The initial discussion on that I think happened just before Trammel. They have always said it was possible, but have never thrown the switch.

i have re-opened accounts that were closed for like 9 months before and still had characters and items.

I am glad this is not true. I am sure there are ALOT of people with closed accounts right now waiting for KR. That would be a big blow to UO if those folks' accounts got deleted and when KR came about, nobody came back cause they didnt want to start over.....

Purging closed accounts would be the most stupid thing any company could ever do. They would then effectively doom their own game forever. I bet EA hopes more than ever that KR will attract purposefully old players as well as new ones.

They have NEVER purged accounts. Database storage is cheap.

Kylas, that's not true - accounts were purged once or twice early on. We haven't done it in a number of years, though.

Yes I was one of the unlucky ones, I started playing in Oct. 98 and then about 6 months later left for about 3 years. When I came back I made a new account because I couldn't remember my old details. Besides my old account was based mainly on Napa, and I lived in Australia (this was before Oceania was made).

Around 2006 I came across a little book we had kept in the house for years with info on out Internet details etc... and in this book was my old user name and password for my very first UO account. Since at the time I was really into UO on my newer account I decided to re-open the old one for an extra house.

I was really looking forward to logging onto my old chars on Napa, even tho I was going to be playing on Oceania since I was relatively rich on my other account and besides, who wants to play with 400+ ping (to Napa) when you can play with around 30 to Oceania?

But when I logged on to Napa and got to the char selection page, guess what? No chars

In memory of my main char back on the purged account, Que Xux, when I first made my 2nd account in 2001 I made another char by the same name, and he is still to this day on Oceania, and is my oldest char at around 6 years old.

One thing that I did find however was all my vet reward choices there, so it was as if my account had been active for the full time, which it hadn't. It is at least some consolation to be recognized as a 7 year vet
