Music Skills Gaining Guide (Provoke/Discord)

Since I love bards so much, I figured I would help all you who are looking for a gain guide out. Keep in mind it is best to train Music up to 100 (you can simply double click an instrument to train this up if you wish), then work on the other skills, due to the Music check that is performed before every bard attempt.

All bard skills gain depending on Bard difficulty, so this list should work for discord, provoke, and peacing. Use non-exceptional instruments. I always bought 20 at a time from the NPC carpenter. This is a list of non-magical, easy to manage pets to practice on:

Buy skill up to 30 using NPC
30-50 Polar Bears
50-60 Frenzied Ostards
60-70 Scorpions
70-80 Giant Beetles (Blue mountable ones)
80-85 Lesser Hiryus (try to get ones with high bard difficulty)
85-90ish Greater Hiryus

90s and up your only option is really Cu Sidhes if you want a non magical target. After GM it can get really slow. Try to get friends with trained Cu Sidhes to let you practice on their pets for a while. Remember that if you have a high chance of succeeding that you will not gain as easily, so sometimes it helps to drop your Musicianship a bit to make it harder to succeed. I would never drop it lower than 90, because you will get the message "You play poorly, and there is no effect" too often.

Good luck!

Thanks for the list.

What's the music check? I didn't know it was better to just lock music at GM then wait while working on other skills. I have 115 music now, and it's a pain gaining discord. I'm only at 70 right now. :/

1) use slayer instruments that are NOT aligned to the type you are targetting to bring down success rate.

2) if you have another character with 100 music, play musical skills and swap out the 120 for the 100

3) train up music on a empty slot to 100 (take about 16 hours), then do #2

Re: Music Skills Gaining Guide

I feel for you, Ally. Discord is quite a pain to raise. Baldguy made some excellent suggestions if you don't want to waste your 15 music points.

It just goes back to what I mentioned in the OP. Your success chance is based on your music, discord (or provoke or peace), and the instrument you are using. Since you have 115 Music, it makes it easier for you to succeed, therefore harder to gain. So really, if you practice on things with higher difficulty, then your 115 Music isn't a problem. I suggest you use the barding calculator on Stratics. Just plug in your skills and it will give you success rates for any monster you pick. You want your success rate to be somewhere between 40% and 60%. 115 Music may make it harder for you to gain at higher levels, but if you just adjust and train on the right creatures (my list probably isn't very accurate for you) then you'll gain normally, which is still too freaking slow.

Re: Music Skills Gaining Guide

every 2 points in music above 100 counts as 1 point in other bard skills. at 100 music, you will never fail the music check and that is why you should lock it at 100 till you get other skills where you want them. if they didn't do it that way, there would be no reason to use music powerscroll...

use slayers to gain for a while, then exceptional, then regular, then opposite slayer and you can gain for a long time off the same target

I've never ran a bard template before. I hope I am understanding this correctly... Train music to 100. Then use the above animals to practice discord/peace/provy?
