Question Dry Wall & Mudding

I know I asked this question before........ but I still need help.

Ok.. I have the sheet rock hung, all I need to do is mud.
I have a gallon of mud, tape and some spatulas and stuff. I'm ready to go! Tell me if I have this correct....

Apply Mud in joints, apply tape, mud over top? Is that really it? Any techniques you would like to share?

How long do I let it dry?

Can some one fill me in on the secrets to wet sanding? (taking excess mud off while its still wet)

Bah for busy relatives, my Uncle owns a construction company and could have this done in 30 minutes but its going to take me 30 hours. At least I learn something

Re: Dry Wall & Mudding

Snuggs, Yes, as you mentioned, all you would need to do is place some mud in the joints and then tape, and mud over the tape. One reccommendation I would make, is make sure you scrape as much excess as possible to avoid more work when it comes to sanding once it dries. If you are going to texturize the wall and if you don't leave a big mess with the mud, you don't really have to worry about it at all. How long to wait to dry? Well, did my job on Friday night over some beers, Saturday recovered from hangover, and it was dry on sunday to sand. (notice I had to sand...don't mud and tape when buzzed!!! hehehe) Sorry, not familiar with wet sanding.

Re: Dry Wall & Mudding

In my experience, usually its like 24 hrs between mudding and sanding.

Wet sanding is for the final smoother finish, and if its an area you're not worried about, you might be able to skip wet sanding.

Usually sanding is done by hand, but if your careful and use fine enough grit-paper, you can get away with a power sander.

Re: Dry Wall & Mudding

when smoothing the wet mud, you can use a fine textured sponge. Done well, you will only need to feather the edges of the mud line.

Did you primer the board first? this is incredibly important!

Did you counter sink the screws/nails? GOnna have to mud over them. It is BEST to primer the heads of hte nails first, then put mud over them. Keeps icky rust stains from appearing.

Use a layer of mud over the joint, apply tape, then a THIN layer over the tape. Use sponge to smooth out.

Re: Dry Wall & Mudding

Is that supposed to be a magic sponge or something?

I just slapped that sheet rock up and screwed those bad boys into the studs. Yes I counter sinked them!

I'm not going to prime the walls till I'm done mudding.

I have a better idea now. I need to go buy a 6-10 Mud knife this weekend. This is going to be fun!
