The gems you are mining are used as ingredients in weapons that were introduced with UO: Mondaine's Legacy (elf gear). A complete list of the gems and what they can be used for can be found at

You would have had a slightly better chance at smelting the Valorite if you'd kept your mining gloves on while smelting, wearing the ringmail gloves would have given your 105 mining (if you donned them with GM mining).
