Lol why do they call them spiders? I know what they do but... why spiders? Just like when they mension "cookies" for the internet... makes no sense why they called them that as well

As the story goes, when the Netscape people developed cookies back in the mid-90's, they named them cookies after the Hanzul and Gretyl fairy tale (where the two left a trail of breadcrumbs to find their way in the woods). Apparently, cookies were more fun than breadcrumbs. The Netscape folks did some other strange things back in those days; I think they were on some wicked crazy drugs! (Just a hypothesis)

And spiders... named such because of the way they "crawl" the internet. The most basic explanation of what they do is, they read an entire web page, then follow all of the links on that page. Then they read each linked page and follow all of the links on THAT page, etc etc. They're crawling the web via hyperlinks. That's why they say, even if you never submit your web site to a search engine, as long as SOMEONE'S web site links to you, you'll eventually end up in the search engines (by getting crawled).
