OK... after doing several houses lately, I've finally gotten the hang of placing most of the roof tiles. (The trick was to turn on tool-tips!! All of the house tiles are labeled, like "south piece" or "north-west intersection" - duh! Much better than trying to eyeball the pieces and guess which is which!)

Here's my latest dilemma: getting the peak of the roof in the right place. Are both sides of the peak supposed to have the same number of levels? (Like, say 4 levels up and then the peak on the 5th level, then 4 levels down the other side of the peak). Does that mean that the width of the area you're covering with a roof should be an odd number of tiles wide? And how do you know how many levels high you should go before placing your peak? My guess is it has something to do with how wide your roof is, but I can't figure out the magic formula.

And is it just me, or does everybody end up placing half-walls under the highest part of the peak of the roof to prevent having a gap there at the ceiling?

As to those half-walls, yes. I use those, too, to fill that gap.

roof peaks: I build my roofs from both sides at once..i.e. all level on roof tiles go down, the up to level two. If your roof is an odd number of tiles wide the roof peak will be on the last level, filling that last vacant row in the center.
If your roof is an even number of tiles wide, you will not use the roof peak tile at all. Your side tiles will meet on the last level and it will look great--just not as much detail as if you'd been able to use the actual peak tile.
