how close do you have to be to be "infused with the energy"?

I'm by the location East of the Island Temple gateway but on the other side of the mountain and had a very quick 1.2 in gains before it fizzled out completely. I never saw that message, either

You have to be in one of the 3 blackrock areas. If you don't see broken crystals on the ground or bad nasty red named munstas around you're not in the right area. Other side of the mountain is too far away.

a shovel and dig in the ground were you stand, if you dont get the message, "you cant seem to find any blackrock", then you are not close enough.
