Yep, if that's the reason
I don't know cell/singular technology well enough to know how it works
But it's my understanding your signal goes to a cell phone mast/tower, then up into space to a satellite, then bounced back down to earth again
Which is why the ping is high

Thanks for your help though. I will post those traceroute times when I get home tonite and try to get an answer from Cingular as to if that's what's going on or not.

Yea i'd say it's going all the way upto a satellite and down again
I could be wrong though, I really wish I knew
But 600ms is 2X as much as I used to get from AOL Dial up in the UK, to Baja on west coast USA

I just talked to Cingular again and they said that yes, it is going from phone to tower blah blah, limited by the speed of the phone blah blah and to try a data card

yea, pings are just a measurement of how long it takes a packet of information to get from one point to another then back again. If you have to go through all these other intermediaries to get from a to b, your ping is going to be high. Your net speed is fine typically because of the fact that most of the time you're just receiving info, as opposed to sending/receiving a piece of info, like ping.

Your right Adam, you'd look at this just like a sat connection. Browsing and email are great. Any type of MMO gaming is going to lag. There isn't much one can do about it.
Perhaps some day the Sat industry will get the speed needed for MMO gaming.

Have you called the internet company and asked them?

Satilite services suck for any sort of streaming data, games, videos etc. I think this sounds very much like this sort of service.

Yeah, its just a lost cause. If I had the 3G network, it would work just like dsl (so they say), but I don't and the closest 3g network is 200 miles away. and even if I get this data card they're talking about, its not going to be any different. So I am just going to say the heck with it and get rid of it before my 30 days are up and Im stuck lol

The only kind of internet I can get around here is either dial up or sat (besides Cingular) and they both suck. Phone company keeps promising dsl, but thats been for 3 years now. So..................Whatever. lol

But now, since i did this with this cingular thing, on my dial up, I lag even worse and can't get to the brit bank lol. So I guess its not meant.
