Re: Running in 2D and 3D

Funny how any thread related to a difference between 2D and 3D always turns into one where folks tell us why one or the other sucks and the other is better and everyone should use it...

Anyhoo, from what I've seen it depends on your system. If your 'puter can handle it, 3D isn't any laggier than 2D really - the difference is in the animation. 3D might appear slower to you because of the way the running animation is done, the steps just seem longer and thus slower whereas in 2D the chars just sprint immediately so to speak. The speed of the actual movement is the same however.

Re: Running in 2D and 3D

well to break the cycle adrianna spoke of, I love both clients, but prefer to run in 2d. My problem, and I dont know if its anyone elses problem is, that my char desktops do not transfer between the 2 clients. Say I log into 3d on my necro/mage. All spells I dragged out are gone, go back to 2d, gotta do it all over. I used to like to drag spells in 3d cause they stuck together and it was neater, but now for some reason, the 2 dont mesh anymore. Does this happen to anyone else? I am tired of re-dragging out 50 icons and resetting up my desktop EVERYTIME I swap clients. Its not soo bad on say a dexxer, with just 10-15 spell icons, but my chiv/mage/spellweaver....thats like 70 something spells to drag. If this wasnt the case, I would be switching all the time between the 2

Re: Running in 2D and 3D

Hmmm... the last time I tried out 2D I had that same problem, my desktop was a total mess... so yeah it's not just you.

It's a bit of a hassle, but maybe you could save your desktops separately for 3D and 2D? As in, set yourself up in 3D and then save the desktop folder from the UO folder somewhere, then log in with 2D and do the same. Now whenever you log in with either client, first copy in the appropriate desktop folder.

Re: Running in 2D and 3D

yah I thought of that, but I log in and out very frequently and change chars as often as 5-10 times a night, depending on what the pvp situation is at that time. We do many different things at any given time and I like to get a char that is better in those situations. I dont want to take the time to do all that, so that is why I just stick with 2d(I should just setup everything in 3d and stick with that, but I have noticed less lag in 2d. No flashies when casting, and at a spawn it can get laggy with the 10000000000 withers going on and the mass gaggle of spawn there too). I dont like to be out of action for too long....

Dang.....never knew it could be that much of a difference since I ask if people are lagging and they say yes. I wonder if it will be worse w/ the new version.

Re: Running in 2D and 3D

hopefully they develop it where it doesnt lag as bad. I think their problem is that they are serving up 2 different clients. I dont know if that is the cause of it or not, but the graphics of 3d are way worse than, say WOW, and I havent heard of people lagging as bad. I think its just the engine, and with this new version, maybe they are using a newer engine that is more efficient.

Re: Running in 2D and 3D

WoW only lags because of the amount of people, as far as graphics go they went with a cartoony looks and looser model designs not trying to detail the heck out of them to make it look like real life... EQ, EQII, SWG.. or whatever else that looks real seems to lag ALOT unless you got a kick arse computer which mine is not THAT good though I can run 2 WoW accounts or WoW and UO give or take... at the same time on same computer.. I do get some lag though but that is because my computer is a Dell a multi-tasker nor built directly to be a full out gaming computer which I wish it does because that is pretty much ALL I do besides post here while I am on the computer hehe.

As for playing UO, I prefear 2D I just like how it looks ALOT better and I just love the traditional UO art it is the last of its kind pretty much... all other games have moved on to 3D which is nice but I do love the 2D style =D

If WoW offred 2D client I would be playing in that HAHAHA! That would totally rock!

Re: Running in 2D and 3D

The only reason third dawn would cause lag is because of poor programming, which would probably be the case here. If they do it right with kingdom reborn there won't be lag due to programming issues.

Re: Running in 2D and 3D

I started out in 3d and used it for the first month or 2 that I played UO. I was having hella problems with getting it to run smoothly and so I tried the 2d client and fel in love. ;) I had ALOT better performance with 2d.

The puter Im on now will run either, but I still use 2d with most of my chars. I usually get on in 3d with my Smith to sort out my messy boxes...gotta love the re-sizable container gumps.

Re: Running in 2D and 3D

If I'm fighting/hunting, then I go 2d, if I'm at an RP event I use Third Dawn. It'll be interesting to see if the new 3d client can sway me to stay with the 3d
As far as lag, even when I had a normal computer I didn't have any probs when I maxed out my memory and added a 128 meg Graphic card..

Now I use a Dell XPS Dual core, so I have TV running (baseball playoffs), UO running, Outlook and Firefox, not a inkling of lag. I know, it's an extreme computer so I won't compare (Just to mnake ya jealous, it's hooked to a 32" LCD monitor that swings out from the wall over our bed. The wife watches TV on her regular TV and I get lost in my headphones and monitor.

Re: Running in 2D and 3D

I think, after reading tons of these "2d vs. 3d" threads, and from personal experience, is that when 3d first came out, and for probably a year or so after, it really WAS laggier and had alot of problems for alot of people. The worst of these being a horrible memory leak issue that I experienced myself. But gradually it seems that 3d has been tweaked and improved to the point where if you have a decent machine running it, it doesn't pose the same problems now as it did early on. But really, at first it was a piece of junk.

Personally I play 2d because I prefer the look of it to 3d. Just personal preference there, I guess. Most PvPers I know run 2d. Maybe they still have lag in 3d or it's just a matter of perception, I dunno. You probably wouldn't have problems with either if you have a fairly newish machine to run UO on. Try them both and see what works best for you.
