you can also pick up the daily spawn covered barrel as well as get water barrels from different stables. Just fill the empty stable barrel (or half barrel) with a pitcher of water, then fill the pitcher back and take your barrel.

I collect them from Brigands and from Dungeons. These are locked and trapped, but a GM mage can open them using the Unlock spell. In addition, you can take the water barrels found on docks by draining them of water (use a pitcher) and picking them up.
