New player! Help

Hiya all I just got UO and I dont know what to do at all, and i dont see any vendors that sell houses, anyone willing to give some advice or hand hold a newbie? Most people I meet in game dont talk to me or maybe i just dont know how to chat lol. It seems like a cool game so i want to play but the learning curve seems steep.

Yeah, UOs greatest downfall is the learning curve.

The best advice I can give you is go out and adventure while you still have the [young] status. Anything that you have with you will stay with you when you die while youre still [young], so dont be afraid to go ahead and attack anything you want.

I would also advise you to get UO Auto-Map from http://www.uoam.net . It is a VERY cool map program that follows you around as you go and lets start to know the "lay of the land."

As far as houses go, I wouldnt wory about getting one for a little while yet. You can "place" your own house, but even the smallest plot is around 40,000 gold or so and then "building" up the floors and walls costs more so Id just kill stuff and take their money for now and use the free inns to log out at.

Welcome to UO and UOForums

Do not "Renounce your Young Status." regardless what anyone promises you.Think about your templete and what skills you will be needing. Look in uoforums skill section for advice and dont be afraid to ask questions.

You'll need to download ICQ, the instant messaging program, that is how UO players communicate with each other. It's free, so no worries about paying. Once you have it installed, you can PM me here and we can meet in game on Chessy and I can show you around and get you oriented and set up with some gear. There is a good event going on right now for acquiring superior gear, you should try to take part in it.

Lenamarie, just becareful of "red moon gates" and "good intentions." Normally the two don't go together.

Re: New player! Help

heh Isnt Red Moongates what the Guardian used? Hopefully I can find a good guild so i dont have to worry about people trying to trick me. How can I start questing? I mean theres real quests right? not just those cheap escort quests, like actual storylines and such ?

Edit> I see what is ment by "good intentions", I got a invite to a guild and a moongate opened (it was blue) and then the idiot is attacking me! What kind of people play UO? Luckily I was able to escape into some trees and behind houses and thanks to UO Auto Map find a moongate to safety and leave the guild. Its crap like that make me want to cancel my account and tell my friends UO still stinks. I mean who was the idiot who thought up the idea of guildmembers being able to attack each other full time?

*sigh* where are all the Good players and guilds? do they even exist?

Its hard not to give up, wondering around haven wondering what to do since my Paladin quest finished and not less then 10 morons try to get me to go into Red Moongates. With a community like this its no wonder UO has a bad rep. So far I've not met even one decent UO player, its frustrating.

I'm at work right now, so I can't help you in game. I'm sorry you've had some bad experiences already, it's part of the early legacy of UO: total freedom to do anything in game, even murder or steal from other players. Although the creators of UO acknowledge now that it was a mistake, they didn't fix it in a conclusive manner, not wanting at the time to admit the fundamental error in their thinking.

For now, I'll give you this advice: take a public moongate to the Tokuno Islands, Makoto-Jima island specifically, and find your way into the desert to the north of the island. Start killing Deathwatch Beetle Hatchlings and let your skills build as you do so. (If you see an NPC named Ansella Gryen, she will give you a small quest to kill these creatures, by the way) Right now there is an event called Treasures of Tokuno going on, it will only last a week or so, so you should take advantage of it. Kill those beetles and you will occasionally be rewarded with a nice item in your backpack or bank box. Save up ten of them (or keep them if you would rather use them) and you can trade it in at the Ministry of Trade in town for a really nice item, look for the Minister of Trade and approach him, and if you have the items in your pack, a turn-in window will open. To see what items you can get by killing the creatures in Tokuno, go to uo.com and look for the event news. There will be info about the event and the items available, if I remember correctly.

I'm glad you picked a Paladin as your first character, it is a good moneymaker with a little training. Don't lose your Undead slayer, keep it in your bankbox for now and go kill the beetles, as I already advised. You can get most of you battle skills up into the high 60's or even 70's by killing the bugs. The skills you want to raise up as a Paladin are:

Weapon skill (swords, fencing, macing)
Parry
Tactics
Anatomy
Healing
Chivalry

I'll get in touch tomorrow and if you're on Chesapeake or another shard on which I have characters, I'll assist you in getting better organized (no gates to go through, no guilds to join. I promise.)

In the meantime, read the "new player" section of uo.com, and review the section on the Treasures of Tokuno, it is a fun event and everyone can get some nice items.

Welcome to UO!
