Hello, I have just starting playing the Demo. Now being a real old person with very slow reactions I am looking for a game which does not need fighting to achieve everything and also a good friendly social game seeing as I live on my own and enjoy online company.
But so far I am hopeless and not got much idea what to do.
I would really like someone to give me a few lessons at a nice slow pace and give me some good reason to buy the game at the end of demo.
Please please help.
I am in UK
Bill

Hi Bill -
One of the biggest draws to UO is the fact it is so diverse. Sure, fighting can be involved, but so can theft, crafting, taming and a whole host of other professions. As you get more proficient in working your way through UO, you'll find that you'll feel more comfortable creating characters that need quicker reflexes
I would say to start out, perhaps make a warrior paladin, then you can fight low level monsters or perhaps a fisherman or a crafter. The problem with crafting and fishing, is the gains can be relatively slow and unless you have a very patient mindset, you might grow bored with them quickly.
Try out a couple different kinds of characters and stay close to cities.
Other new char advice - avoid red gates (the land of Felucca) - that's where the player vs. player combat goes on.

Thanks for information, can you recommend a good friendly shard to use please. Obviously I would like one that is mainly for UK players as I am not good at foreign language:embarasse .
I am that thick that I have even used my email address as my signature :embarasse Wish I could change it.

I'd say any shard is good... there is ALOT of good people in UO but of course like any game you will still have your jerks but nothing as BAD as the other MMORPG's I have played.

Bill | Bill, most European players are on the Europa and Drachenfels shards, which are based in Europe. Many, though, play on the US shards too, especially the Atlantic shard, which is the most populated of the US shards.
Since you are a new player, I would advise making a Paladin using the pre-made template, and also make a Blacksmith using the pre-made template. Each of these has a really nice beginner quest that teaches you a lot about the game. Between the two quests, you will learn a lot about UO.
Do you have ICQ installed on your computer? You will need it for chatting purposes in game, since UO's in-game chat system is rarely used by players.
Once you decide on a shard and install ICQ, post the info here and some of us will do the best we can to meet you ingame and help you learn the ropes.

Your best bet would to try Europa or Drach. Those are the European based shards. The other ones you will crawl across the screen like a snail most likely.

Welcome Bill!
You're not thick , you'd be surprised how many people use their email address as their username, at least then it's easy to remember eh?
If you'd like it changed though, let me know which username you'd like and i'll change it for you
Remember, when you ask me to change it, it "may" log you out, so you'll have to login under your new username
My recommendation would be to choose "Bill", it's not taken and not something you'll forget
Welcome again to the forums, you'll find some great people here.
