UO and Laptops Semi OT

I am considering replacing my pooched Desktop (P3 900) with a Dell ( P4 1.6) or equivilent Laptop. For most of my home playing I would use a a regular monitor/ keyboard and mouse, but thought that this would allow me some freedom to eventually play from the cottage among other places.

I am sure there are a few of you that play on a laptop. I would love some feed back and insight from your experiences.

Stats shoulds be about:
P4 either 1.6 GHZ or 1.8 GHZ
1 G DDR2 ram
80 GB HD
128 MB Raydon video card
15.4" LCD true bright monitor

plus all the various other things dvd burner network card...etc

Thanks for the feedback in advance........
reply here...I will call Anne and Bug her to read me your replies
hehehe

Laptop should work AOK, did you have a CRT monitor before? or an LCD?

If you change to an LCD, you'll notice when you move around in UO, the UO Screen seems to "shimmer" (Best description for it)
IT's weird when you first see it, but you get used to it.

Re: UO and Laptops Semi OT

Laptops are fine to play UO and Guildwars, only 2 games i realy play on PC and i also only use laptops.

Dell laptops however.... Dont like them. Ive had a few laptops, as said i only use laptops, and the Dell ones were the worst. Shortly followed by a compaq armarda. My fave laptops are packard bell ones.

Either way, if your going to buy a laptop, make sure it will accept a fresh install of your favoured operating system. Some laptops throw a tantrum when you try full reinstalls, and to be honest, if you dont do a self install you end up with al that useless crap that your supplier felt like putting on your PC. On a laptop its just a bit more wise not to junk up your hard drive etc cause they dont last as long as desktops, and its harder to re fit parts in them (if you can at all!).

Heh yea, to true
AOL, Compuserve and Tiscali seem to infest laptops bought from manufacturers like Dell/Compaq etc.
I tend to wipe any system I buy from a manufacturer and install windows from fresh.

Re: UO and Laptops Semi OT

I play on a laptop exclusively. I use a Dell Inspiron 9300, it has on it
Pent Mobile 1.73gz 533FSB CPU
1280Gz RAM 533FSB
17 widescreen
Geforce 6800(256mg) Video Card
60g 7200rpg hard drive (DO NOT accept anything less, like the 5400, they are tooooooooooo slow)

Overall I have been very pleased with it, although the headphone jack doesnt stand up to heavy use, as it works its way loose. I am on the 3rd motherboard, due to its not being able to be individually replaced. It gets a little hot after a while, so I use a pad underneith of it when playing, but I would never go back to a desktop. Mostly due to my back and neck injuries, and cant sit at a desk for a long time. I have a reclining couch and play from there.

Re: UO and Laptops Semi OT

You know, when I first started, it was on my desktop, and it was a 1.2 Athelon with a GEF 2TI, and like 512RAM and I could not play 3d to save my life. The first time I logged on I quit, cause I couldnt move, and did not know there was 2d to play on.. hehe.. About a month later, I logged on again after upgrading the vid card to a GEF MX 440 and decided to give it a go. I was still in that training room in Haven where Palis start. hehe..

Re: UO and Laptops Semi OT

That set up should be a dandy for anything in 2d, but it will probably still choke on 3d in areas of high population. So if youre going to go do a champ spawn or go to an event, just log 2d....its more fun that way anyhow...

On a side note, take a look over at http://www.ibuypower.com I just ordered a new desktop (mine is older thn yours man....I know how you feel) very cheap with everything I wanted. I didnt look at the notebooks over there, but Ive been pretty impressed with them so far and hearsd good things from a few people I know...

Re: UO and Laptops Semi OT

Thanks for all the feed back eveyone!
My desktop was about 5-6 years old and the p3 chip finally overheated.

I purchased a inspiron 6400 duo core T2400 1.83 GHZ
100 G HD
1 G ddr2 ram
128 mb Radeon x1300
15.4 truelife monitor
8 x dvd burner....
and all the other standard bells and whistles

Now I just have to wait for it to be built and delivered....
I appreciate all the advice and look forward to being back in the game in a few weeks!

Re: UO and Laptops Semi OT

If I were to buy a new PC, i'd probably go Mesh computers or Dell
Only thing that puts me off of Dell, is their "Pro Intel" stance, they don't sell AMD "chipped" PC's
They ARE changing their minds, but it's starting with high end servers first, then maybe they'll do desktops/laptops.
