Last night we had a wildlife 'incident'. My mom has a soft spot for animals. I do too, but nothing like hers. We live next to a huge woodland park. Every night, my mom leaves a bowl of dry cat food out for the little critters to come and snack on. I enjoy watching them come up. We have a few regulars, like an old racoon who is just enormous, or a momma possum with a litter of 3 babies. We also have a few stray cats who stop by every now and again for a visit. Well our back porch is screened in. Last night she forgot to close the door. About 3 in the morning I heard a bang, and went to investigate. A huge possum had gotten into the back porch area, and couldn't find his way out. Now, I don't know if any of you have ever seen a possum up close. They are quite ugly. They also have very sharp claws for climbing trees, and teeth like a mouthful of needles. They waddle along and are content to run away.... unless they feel cornered. Never corner a possum, because if you do, he won't stay cornered for long.

Anyway.... we had this huge possum on the porch, and I wasn't quite sure what to do about it. I woke up my mom, who proved to be as useless as ever. She shrieked, which scared the already nervous possum. Then she shoves the broom into my hands and tells me to get it off the porch. Now, I personally am content to wait and see if Mr Possum can figure his own way out, but no. So I edge out of the door on to the porch with the possum. I am making soft noises and moving slowly, trying to herd the possum to the door. The possum looks me dead in the eye and hisses. I stop, and so does he. I take another slow step forward, holding the broom out in front of me. Mr Possum hisses again, and bares his teeth. At this point my mom yells "What is it doing?" and scares the possum. The possum decided he didn't care for me, or the broom. Thankfully it was the broom he got hold of first. While I was holding the stick end of the broom, the bristle end had a growling, snarling, hissing angry possum attacking. While the possum was attacking, I took my small chance and ushered him, broom and all, out the door. I flung the broom as far as I could with him still attached, and slammed the door behind him. He released the broom, looked at me with those beady little eyes, and just walked off. Unbelievable.

If you have ever had to buy a new broom because you ruined yours while getting a possum out of your house, you might be a red neck.

I never had a possum.. but I use to live up on a hill, i had a second floor balcony and I fell asleep with the back door open.... and woke up to a racoon in my kitchen... we came to a friendly agreement... I would back out of the kitchen if she went back to the balcony... I started leaving dog food out for it everynight.... and if I forgot to do it... it would sit by my living room window and scratch at the screen and chatter at me until I came out with the bowl...she would even allow me the priviledge of sitting on the balcony with her and talking i miss that racoon and the babies she eventually brought along with her when they were old enough... I certainly hope the new people who moved into that apartment were nice to her.
